Games You Beat in 2025: Year of the Backlog

Resident Evil HD I complained about the second half of this game a little in What Are You Currently Playing, but by the end I came around on it. I think I still would have preferred it stay more straight scary horror, but I can appreciate what it actually is even if it's not what I would have wanted from it. The fact that I can still play and enjoy it almost 25 years after it came out, having never played it before (in fact I bounced off the Gamecube version ~2005) so having no nostalgia really speaks well of how good the core of the game really is. I'm not going to grade this one because I would be unfairly dinging it for modern game quality of life stuff that nobody was doing yet when it came out, so instead I'll just say that I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who's interested in checking it out. - Yesterday

Resident Evil HD Okay, I see why this game is a classic, but goddamn it's dragging in the second half. It's not scary anymore, it's gotten away from the zombies and now it's all sharks and frogmen, and every night I start playing I think I'm gonna finish it, but then it turns out there's more. I still feel generally positive about the game, and I recognize that at its core it's over 20 years old so I'm trying to cut it a bit of slack, but goddamn, end already!

Games You Beat in 2025: Year of the Backlog

The Suffering Played this game aeons ago, on PS2, but never made it past the prison section lol. Kinda glad I never made it past there back then though, don't think younger me would have been able to clear the last boss. Overall, it holds up pretty well, outside of jump/dodge being mapped to one of the triggers, there aren't any super weird controller shenanigans, the gameplay is pretty simple but that works in its favour, the main thing is that the voice acting for most NPCs is hilariously cheesy, so much that it clashes with the atmosphere and monster design. The last boss being a gimmick boss is also pretty annoying, specially with how hard it is to actually hit the target while dodging attacks. There's also a morality system, leading to one of three endings, good, neutral or bad, managed to get the good ending lol. You get good or evil points depending on certain things, some actions give good points, some give evil points, some give you a choice, or you can do nothing and get the neutral ending lol, these are pretty obvious for the most part, help a prisoner escape the island and you get good points, keep turning on the electric chair, and you get evil points, some are really hard to get though, simply because of how hard it is to keep NPCs alive in this game. Still you don't need to get all of them for any of the endings you want. A neat thing that ties to the story, Torque carries a photo of his family, depending on your choices, the photo will look cleaner or dirtier and crumpled, looking at it tells you which path you're on. A good way to start spooky month, now onward to the sequel. Grade: B+
