I've read a few RE 6 reviews and I have not been impressed. I'm talking about the reviews here, not the game. Review the game you've got, not the game you want. Whether or not modern Resident Evil is similar to the Resident Evil of your childhood is not the issue at hand. Whether modern Resident Evil is fun and if it's improved from the previous installment is what a review should be covering.

Don't think it needs to improve on a previous instalment. If you say that then you open the door to all previous instalments. A review should cover if it is objectively good, that is to say that the game is not broken in some fundamental way, how much they personally enjoyed it, and why they did or did not enjoy it.

I disagree. I think that whether a game stays true to previous entries in the series is absolutely within the scope of the review. It's not the be-all and end-all of the review by any means, but it's still fair game for discussion, especially if the changes mean it's losing what (some) people liked about it to begin with.
Disclaimer: I have no opinion about RE6 specifically.

I think when a developer tells people specifically what they are going for "a more survival horror feel with the Leon campaign", and people fail spectacularly, you can probably fault them for it.
