You don't have THAT much freedom to define the story.

You don't have that much freedom to define *events*. How your approach those events is up to you.

Eh. You have some options, but the story still generally goes the same. You're still out to rally troops and save the galaxy. The level of freedom is not nearly as high as your Big Lebowski comparison suggests.
