Having not watched Dr. Who, those similarities seem like they could be pretty superficial. You can draw a few parallels between stuff and ignore all the differences and it makes them seem a lot more similar than they really are.

Isn't the mass effect plot standard fare? Aliens that want to wipe out the entire galaxy? Isn't that what all aliens want to do anyway? And, of course, it's always Humanity that saves the day.

I think he just finished watching Dr. Who, after discovering it in Netflix.
