I've learned that you can completely kill a matchmaking multiplayer game's community in one of two simple flaws: an inability to join a match that's already started, and a pointless player number restriction before a match starts (such as "match only starts with 6 people in a room"). Suffice to say, if you have both at once in one game you might as well kiss that multiplayer goodbye.

RockyRan: what you've learned is pretty blatantly false. There are games where it wouldn't make sense to let people join in the middle of the match. The same goes for the player number restriction.
Example: Heroes of Newerth.

I don't think HoN was the type of game he's talking about (That's 2+ players for one) more competitive FPS.

He didn't specify any type of game other than that it involves matchmaking.
