  1. I'd actually love to play this, but I'll have to time my playthrough carefully. Demon's Souls CONSUMED my life last fall when I played it, which did a number on my college work even though I had a lot more freetime during that particular semester. This semester I'm much more busy, so for the sake of my sanity (and college career) I NEED to stay away from this until most likely next summer.
  2. Played a couple of rounds of BF3 Beta only to be reminded how much I hate BF games. Screw that shit, back to SotC I go.

  3. I think this is what people are complaining about more than anything. Personally I like to have a media blackout when I'm anticipating a certain game, because I've found that when I know nothing about a game I tend to enjoy it more. So suppose I browsed Kotaku (yeah, I know, crazy. Bear with me here) and I'm anticipating Arkham City so much it's on my "media blackout" list. I'd be pissed too if they put a plot development in bigass letters right on the headline in the front page as well. It's common courtesy to put this kind of info further into the article. But hey, it's Kotaku. Deliberately pissing off their readership for the sake of page hits is the order of the day over there.
  4. Because Origin is going to make EA tons of money the best way to play Battlefield! That's the thing, though, I start the game with Origin but then I use the Battlelog site on the web browser. I don't think it's because of Origin, I think it was just a crappy design decision :/ I actually haven't checked my CPU/RAM usage with the game on.
  5. To those saying alt-tabbing is quick: am I missing something? Because when I alt-tab from full-screen BF3 it takes a good 3-4 seconds of black screen time until I can see my desktop again. It's far more inconvenient than an in-game server browser that shows up immediately upon hitting ESC. I still fail to see any reason why we have to do this hopping between browser and game. I see absolutely no advantage to this, and can see plenty of disadvantages.
  6. Keep getting booted from servers before I can even finish a single match. And I especially hate the way the game just immediately crashes to desktop when doing that. Far more annoying than, say, the way TF2 does it, which freezes everyone and says "LOST CONNECTION TO THE SERVER, DISCONNECT IN 30 SECONDS". At least I know what's going on instead of happily playing a match then the next picosecond I'm staring at my server browser.
  7. Wow. Just wow. Two days after the ICO/SotC releases, Amazon decided to give a deal of 2 collections for $80. And I bought the Uncharted collection on the same day for $30, which would've saved me $10. Massive dick move, Amazon. Massive dick move.

Dude, DON'T POINT THAT OUT! It's like with Black Friday, knowing a better deal ruins the purchase!

Oh well, I already have a sizable backlog. Just got Bind of Issac too.

I think it's hilarious you get so upset over stuff like this. I mean really, as long as you're not paying more than retail what's the big deal? I feel like missing deals is just part of shopping and always has been. It's why some stores have that "price match within 2 weeks" where if they lower the price you can get the difference.

  8. I was only able to play half a match but the UI is terrible. There's really no reason why the server browser and all those thingimajigs can't be in the game proper, it baffles me as to why they force you to constantly click out of the game to join another one. Feels like I'm playing with one of those 3rd party multiplayer hacks. Completely unprofessional. And yes, I too despise the in-game menu only being accessible after you've spawned. There's absolutely no reason for that limitation. Although the first 3 seconds of the game brought a smile to my face when I saw I could throw medkits on level one. Fuck you, Bad Company 2, for forcing people to be nooblet battlemedics at Level 1. Unlocking competence was, unironically, really incompetent.
  9. At the risk of sounding hipsterish, I've reached the conclusion that practically every complaint levied against Shadow of the Colossus is by people who simply don't get it. The controls are fine, STFU. No, you don't need "enemies", STFU. You actually need to LOOK and be aware of the world around you to track down the Colossi, STFU.

Okay, SotC is one of my favorite games of all time. OF ALL TIME! That said, the controls are pretty terrible for anything requiring even the slightest bit of precision. They're fine for climbing the Colossi most of the time, but they're also the reason this: http://bit.ly/nb3jjX is, imho, the most frustrating part of the game.

That part is pretty annoying, but IMO later battles get much worse. (Mild spoilers?) The small, 4-legged ones irritate me because they'll smash you... then before you get up, they smash you again... and again... and again... until you either die, or land in a corner or trough or something where they can't reach you. Nothing's as bad as the really big ones that just won't go where you need them to though - the idea of doing these as time trials is a bit insane, I think.

Mighty Ethan, your picture has inspired so much rage. So much. And you had to swim such a huge distance back to get to there. I honestly thought I was going the wrong way.

  10. Today I got the Team ICO collection and the Uncharted dual pack. I'm orgasming in anticipation of playing all four of those games for the first time. Too bad I have homework out the ass. Damn you, higher education! Let my brain rot in peace!

Done that before at BB. I normally don't get strategy guides, but when the Spirit Tracks Collector's Guide was marked $19.99 (standard guide price), I jumped on it.

Haha... we had it up to *whips out an abacus...* 86 the other day in Alberta. Strange year, but our summer started cold and rainy, so I'll take it! I'd expect it to be closer to 60 here now.

  12. He's actually been pretty bad about responding to this kind of stuff recently
  13. Anyone get the "ran out of memory" error? I keep getting it every 2 minutes and it makes the game completely unplayable. I've tried some fix that allocates more RAM to Java but I'm still getting the crashes.
  14. RPS's impression definitely piqued my interest. I mean, I've been using OnLive but only through the PC client. I'm really curious to know how it looks on a TV, since Alec said the PC client looked like ass by comparison.
  15. Jesus fuck. Looks like I picked the single worst retailer to pre-order ICO/SotC from. Looks like everyone BUT Amazon either sells it at a discount or gives credit of some kind. Fuck you, Amazon >:|

    4. RockyRan

      RockyRan

Relative value, folks. If MSRP is $40 but everyone and their mother is giving promotions of some kind, the one place that still sells it at MSRP only isn't giving a "good deal" by comparison. Worse yet, Amazon gives promotions on a whole bunch of preorders, except the exact one I'm buying. Feeling shortchanged? Very much so.

@Johnny: Amazon store credit, can't shop around.

  16. Does anyone know why RPS's main page hangs for so long? Seriously, that page fucking CRIPPLES my netbook.

It seems to be related to the full-screen background ads. The site runs fine when they aren't running anything like that.

I've noticed it too. The Awesome has it as well. Kind of annoying cos the page has seemingly loaded but the browser reckons no.

  17. I just don't see this happening. How does MS benefit from that? Not to mention controls and all that stuff. Maybe they'll release 'special' games that can be played on both PC and 360, but I don't see how MS are going to benefit themselves by doing that Yeah, that ain't happening. The whole reason why MS went into the console business in the first place was to create a walled garden so it can charge royalties and overprice goods for everything. They've spent all these years shitting on the PC trying to get PC gamers to buy an Xbox, this rumored feature would undo all their work. To quote the shitty Oblivion voice actors: "Not now, not latah not evah"
  18. OK, $2 Alpha Protocol. I HAVE to bite. No matter how much bad rap it's gotten, it HAS to be worth $2.

  20. I'm considering making a satirical comeback article on PXoD. Tabloid reporters can't tell real world from fantasy, says common sense Dean, have I permission?
  21. I haven't played Brotherhood :/ After having played AC2, how could you not have played Brotherhood? Moneys, time. I'll pick it up eventually. I don't mind being "behind" the release (I played AC2 for the first time like in July).
  22. It's all about the focus. Like I said, the focus in Borderlands is number chasing when speaking from a bird's eye view. Changing out weapons is still very stat heavy and numbers are being thrown at you for no real reason. Imagine playing the game without any numbers whatsoever, Oblivion style. Dreadful, isn't it? That's because the focus is ultimately in the numbers, with the different weapon/ammo types being essentially window dressing. Numbers appearing in games is not inherently a sin, but I'm saying there has been far too much reliance on having numbers and using those numbers to control the progress of a game rather than have said progress come organically. For me, the former system, which is quickly being adopted across many genres, is more boring. It works, but in my opinion, it's lazier. There's a time and place for everything, including showing stats and having RPG-like progression, but from my perspective I'm seeing far too many game developers thinking it's automatically better for any game to have them, and I'm saying otherwise. Not every game needs to be a stat and grindfest, and I'm even including RPGs in that. Like you said, Oblivion hides these stats behind a black box, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's one of the reasons why I like Oblivion so much, because it's more about the actual game and experience of role-playing and exploration rather than comparing spreadsheets and grinding for EXP. And I'm not saying that's how every game should be, I'm just saying doing the opposite isn't how every game should be either. I haven't played Brotherhood :/
  23. Borderlands was completely awful in its loot system, relying on a very small amount of "elemental damage" types across god knows how many guns and relying far too much on OMG NUMBERZ to differentiate between different guns. Even if the guns had scope or no scope, guns or sniper/assault rifles, etc. the minute-to-minute gameplay still relied far too much on needless grinding and number chasing. It really does very little of what I just talked about.
  24. I wasn't talking so much the leveling as I was talking about the actual loot to be found in Oblivion. Oblivion loot I found differed from other RPGs in that the stats provided were minimal, but rather what differentiated one advanced piece of equipment over the other was the magical properties, and more often than not said magical properties were more than just "+5% shield" or whatever. I wouldn't know about Fallout 3. I've only played New Vegas, but loot-wise it's a pretty boring game. :/ I enjoyed AC2's villa upgrade system, but it was completely broken, unfortunately. I upgraded absolutely everything in the villa about halfway through the game and I proceeded to have practically infinite money. Had there been more and more expensive upgrades I would've absolutely loved that system. OoT was also a good indicator of progress without "NUMBERZ". Like you said, progress was very visual and even changed the world itself. I found Batman's upgrade system to be competent, but kind of eh, because it does exactly what I dislike. You do "things", you get Space Bucks, spend Space Bucks into an imaginary shop where they laundry list all the upgrades. Pretty generic stuff. Although they also did do a lot of what I liked, which was keeping a great pace and introducing new items/mechanics slowly over time independent of the Space Buck Shop, so for me that cancelled out the crappiness from the 'Shop there.
