Theres a new firmware update for the PS3, so if youre planning on going online, you should probably get that out of the way as soon as possible.

Most programs though allow you to decline to update and still get all the functionality of the machine.
@FDS: Not really, it's just that when I only have a short period of time to play a game it's irritating to lose it to an update.

If you don't update your PS3 you only lose online functionality. And even that depends on the update as some are optional.
Anyways, 5 minutes on 360 vs 10 on PS3... still not seeing much of a difference. Just play a game on your phone if you're that crunched for time.
