I'd say that was long overdue, but to be honest anyone who was iffy about buying the game probably found a way to "try out" the game anyway.

If I recall correctly, I remember a Tutorial button when Survival as we know it first came out. I am going to assume Notch never got around to it and even removed the button since Minecraft spread by word of mouth, then instructions on how to play is by word of mouth as well. So it sort of defeats the purpose of a tutorial. As for finding out for the first time on how to do craft this and that... no idea.
