Maybe I'm more proud of myself than I should be... but I just took apart a DualShock 3, fixed it (the buttons were sticking), and put it back together, all without directions or prior knowledge of how the thing worked. I did shock myself a few times, though....

Battra: Controller was brand new, actually. Problem was that the buttons weren't perfectly round- apparently, they snap out of sheets like model pieces, because it had those same little plastic stubby bits, and I just had to sand those down.
Chaos: I think you'd be even more successful- on the 360 con, you can disconnect the batteries first XD
