Why is Dark Souls named Dark Souls instead of Demon's Souls 2, and why is there a Dark Souls 2 instead of some new name? Is there a difference between Demon's Souls and Dark Souls?

Dark Souls 2 is a sequel to Dark Souls. Places may be different but there are similarities. If you bother with the lore, it'll be explained.

Pretty much what Cowboy said. They're too similar for Dark to even be called a spiritual successor, imho. That's why most people refer to all three games as the Souls series. All the differences with the title, lore, characters, stories, etc.. from Demon's to Dark are entirely for legal reasons (most likely because From wanted to go multiplat with the series). And even then, some minor characters do carry over from Demon's to Dark.
