I don't think the general public is to blame for the outrage. The news item (and Kotaku article) was intentionally deceptive. Sure, anyone with the slightest amount of critical thought could figure out what was really going on, but I learned that it's not always a good idea to put that much faith in the general public.

Nintendo's own estimate is 3-5 hours, but as Wrayfield pointed out, Nintendo is known for being very conservative when it comes to estimates, so this is probably with maximum brightness and music at full volume. 5 hours is probably the battery life during normal use (just my guess).
