I was given a Windows 8 laptop at work. It's the most slipshod piece of software I've used in a long time.

I actually like the tiles... but it boots me to the desktop to do anything useful. I'm willing to give a new paradigm a shot, but then why does it feel so much like patchwork?

It's trying to please everyone. Modern UI for people who buy $300+ Facebook machines. Desktop for the rest of us.

Yeah... I wouldn't say it's a different beast at all. I'm using Windows 8 at home and I wish my work laptop has Windows 8 too instead of 7.
