Nearly half of game design is just getting the "feel" right. If shooting is fun it can make up for crap level design.

Hard Reset's level and encounter design actually ruined the game for me and no amount of good-feeling shooting could make up for it.
Also, for as much love the original Deus Ex gets, I've never managed to get past the introductory level. I far prefer Human Revolution. /heathen

Liberty Island, you mean? Yeah, it's not a great opening level, to be honest. The game only really hits its stride about a third of the way through.

Ok, "crap level design" was too strong. Good feel can help make up for a bit of mediocre level design
