what the hell, I can't "view new content" if I'm not logged in now? So much for me lurking from my phone.

Actually Dean it wasn't. Since I always clear my cookies, cache and everything and check the website I can say that you could till today check view new content without being logged in. However that would show content from the past 48 hrs as opposed to new content since the last time you logged in.
I think that's just been changed now. But it was there at least 2 weeks ago when I checked.

Huh. I've always had the issue of not being able to access new content if you're not logged in. Used to be an issue in sharing links, but now I know of Active Content not an issue.
