After using Windows 8.1 for a few hours, I don't get the hate. Metro sucks, but I don't have to use it.

8.1 fixed most of the issues with 8. At this point it's not so much that I hate 8 as that I still like 7 better.

The only thing I dislike is that if I swipe on the trackpad in a particular way, it calls up the right-hand toolbar, no matter what I'm doing. I think I can turn that functionality off, though.
