@AgamemnonV2: The requirement to swear an oath was abolished in 1932 by Eammon DeValera. Even before then, only those entering TDs and Senators had to swear an oath. Swearing an oath is not required to be an Irish citizen and it's not implied if you are an Irish citizen.

I live in the US. I think that having children recite the pledge is creepy, and a problem.
I am neither nationalist, nor am I religious. This would seem to demonstrate that making kiddies say the pledge doesn't have much effect.
The US as a whole is extremely religious and extremely nationalist. This would seem to argue that something, possibly the pledge, causes Americans value these ideals highly.
