    Can anyone recommend a thin but solid mousepad? Preferably not too big. I know some of them get huge!

      Don't know if it's what you want, but you might want to look at the Dell KU170 mousepad. It's a thin pad of rubber, then a sheet of aluminum, and a textured hard plastic decal on top. Works great with optical mice.
