We started out with dumb terminals and mainframes, then moved to powerful local computers, now with the push for "cloud" everything we're heading back toward the dumb terminal/mainframe setup. Technology is weird.

Yeah... I've seen thin clients rise and fall repeatedly but never really stick. Now that it's so easy to cheaply pack things with computing power... I think a lot of the cloud push just facilitates surveillance and dependence on ongoing service from the host; mainly the latter. The more you can sell as a service rather than a feature, the better.

Yeah, with the exception of stuff like OnLive the new model seems to be focused more on keeping your data in the cloud so it's accessible everywhere, rather than having the computing power be in the cloud.

I guess for the majority. But there's plenty of cloud productivity suites, rentable number crunchers, etc
