Socom 4

Anyone excited for this game? I admit, I haven't played any of the Socom games but the game intrigues me...A lot. I really hope the demo doesn't disappoint. If it impresses me by any means, I might just skip Homefront and Crysis 2 for this.

Proper tactics are needed. It doesn't look as tense and stressful as Battlefield games seem to be and it's nothing like CoD. Don't get me wrong. I know there are a ton of you fans of the series out there, but I kinda "outgrew" it. Give me something slower and more tactical anytime.

And please don't litter the thread with "Thiz is fakersz SocoM! SOcm 2 is da shit!" or something similar. Yes, a lot of us have heard how this one is not "faithful." But bitching won't do anything about it.

I finally jumped into the beta last night, and was both pleased and a let down.

I must say, it certainly feels more like the first 2 Socom games in terms of controlling the character and the feel of aiming/firing. The one level I played in was huge, and pretty well laid out as far as I can tell, plenty of distinct features for one to become familiar with and exploit. It was strong visually and aurally, had 16 person teams (I'm still not sure if I like that or not)and looked to have a typical level of customization of weapons, the main distinguishing factor being the ability to carry two primaries at once. I know it's not unheard of, but it's rare.

Two huge problems for me though.

1. Respawning? I think Confrontation was like that too, but this isn't Confrontation, this is (supposed to be) a real Socom game. Maybe there are certain game modes that make you wait your death out for the round, but I didn't notice it in the beta. Then again I only played a few rounds, and din't really look... Respawning constantly changes the game so drastically though, that it totally undoes a lot of what makes the game feel like Socom.

2. Autospeak. I think I've finally had it with microphones. When this console generation began and most (if not all) games were employing autospeak chat functionality (exclusively) in games I was let down, but I hardly expected it to become THE way things are done. If I can't even rely on Socom to let me push a button when I want to talk I don't think I'll ever see it again. I might as well just leave this stupid headset in my car so I can bitch about the new Socom while I drive. I can't tell you how low my heart sank when the first round booted up and I heard 6 or 7 yammering assholes on the mic at once.

I don't know, I might wind up picking it up cheap later or Gamefly-ing it. If it was the only shooter out it would be a different story, but this is far from the case. As it is I only allow myself a couple of these a year, and I'm already playing KZ3 online and getting near the end of it. I didn't last 30 minutes into Crysis 2, which means that I've had enough shooter action for a few months.

After playing the beta for a couple hours, I promptly deleted this game. It's very evident that Zipper is trying to chase the money-wagon that COD pulls behind it while giving the finger to anyone who has played the previous titles. I don't even know where to start, there is just more to me wrong with this game than there is that is right, at least on the multiplayer front. :(

It's sad, too, because I really wanted to like this game, being made by Zipper and not /6. It's too bad that between the two companies they have not been able to piece together a better game than SOCOM 2 yet. It's just downhill.

Also, it seems to be getting a lot of non-stellar reviews, so that helps the decision process for me too.
