staySICK
I'm looking to buy a new monitor as soon as newegg processes my gift cards. what I'm looking for: - sub $200 - at least one HDMI input in addition to the DVI input - speakers (I plan on being able to hook my x360 / ps3 up to it at times) - at least 1920 x 1080 resolution currently I'm looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236067 unless I've overlooked something better; is it worth the extra money for the ~3ms and 1.5" difference? I currently have a 20" Acer 1680 x 1050, but I'm looking to replace, not add to. Not really a fan of multiple screens, the bezel distracts me too much for multiscreen gaming. Discuss. Mal
I have a ASUS VH232H that I got about a year about when my old one was dying. The ones you chosen are about the same to mines so... its all good. Can't say that the build in speakers are good but it does it job. I actually wonder if it has headphone jacks..................... you made me look. Yes it does. WOW. Can't believe I NEVER checked. I think I'm going to catch up on some Red Dead while my younger brother plays his GT5 next to me on the TV... As for the 3ms difference... eh. It could help? Not sure. If I ever lag, I always assumed that it was my connection, not my monitor.* As for the 1.5" screen difference... its your personal preference. 23" monitor is pretty damn sweet. I think I came from a 20" too. I personally got the 23" since it was what I determined to be the maximum size I can go with my current desk setup. Besides, this monitor should at least have another 2 more years to it lifespan so... yeah. I rather get a bit too big than one too small if i have to live with it for a few years. * Get the $180 one and lets swap then I'll get back to you in one year. deanb
I currently have a 20" Acer 1680 x 1050, but I'm looking to replace, not add to. Not really a fan of multiple screens, the bezel distracts me too much for multiscreen gaming. Discuss. I'd only got multi-screen gaming with 3 or more anyway, and of the same size and resolution. Sup Com is about it for dual screen games that are cool with different screens. So you can still have both screens, just run one with the game and the other with whatever when gaming (or not at all). Dual screens is more a productivity thing than a gaming thing. Anyway, both monitors are 5ms, the 2ms(gtg) is marketing bullshit to make it look better. GTG = Grey to Grey. So it's not 2ms unless you play grey games. Most games tend to be quite deep blacks and contrasting colours. (It's like that whole "100,000:1 Dynamic contrast" shite. Means fuck all in real life once you toss in "dynamic") So I'd go with the bigger monitor, especially for gaming. They're the same resolution, so you're gonna have a lower DPI on the bigger screen, but I've got a 27" 1080p screen and it's not like it's a pixelated mess. So yeah, get the $180 one, and use both screens. At least give it a spin for a week or so. Especially if you're on Windows 7.
Kovach_
I've got a BenQ G2420HD, it should be sub 200$ now, 24", it's got DVI, HMDI, headphone jack etc. I've had it for some time now and i'm really pleased with it. https://www.pcczone.com/benq-g2420hd-24-hdmi-usb-port-black-lcd-monitor.html Edited March 27, 2011 by Kovach_

Especially if you're on Windows 7. beyond the matter of not really using multiple screens, my desk physicallly won't allow for a second screen; its not big enough. But yea, I ordered the $180 one I listed. I found another $180 one that was 23.6" by ASUS, but I get a larger rebate with the one I previously listed. Before rebates, it costs $89 for me, so $69 after rebate. Not bad.
deanb
Use the savings to get a bigger desk? How small we talking?
staySICK
It's one of those dorm style fold up desks. When we settle down and buy a house I'll buy a more standard desk. This is nice and easy to move.
R__
Samsung is the only brand you should consider. I've gone with other brands before, and they never match up to the Samsung quality. You might pay $20 more for Samsung over "comparable" models, but it's worth it. This is something you will be staring at for hours, so spend the extra money and get the best quality. There's different price levels to consider, it is not simply an extra $20. Plus, I think it's idiotic to put all of your trust into one company.
Mal
Got to go with what FDS said. Samsung is a very nice brand but... from what I have seen when I was shopping around, it isn't just $20 more. More like a Benjamin+. Believe me, I want my sweet Samsung TV and monitor but... they cost an arm and a leg. --- Maybe folks like Sick-ie can pull it off if they saved more but, for folks like me, it was an emergency buy. It was already pushing on my available budget as well. Edited March 29, 2011 by MaliciousH
Gigawings
How about 1080 LCD TV? they're cheaper now. I got mine ('22 LG) when it still $300 a year ago, I bet they're cheaper now.
staySICK
well, it came in, I'm using it now, and its beautiful. I'll have to try hooking a system up to it this weekend. and just to illustrate the size of my desk: I don't think I could fit much larger than a 23" on here I really need to get some newer speakers. These are ooooooold, but they still work pretty good.
