Windows 7 Phone

So I just got a Samsung Focus with Windows Mobile 7 loaded up on it, and I was wondering if anybody else has one, their thoughts, and what games they think are bomb.com? Personally I love the Harvest, the Sims, and the magic marker game.

As far as the operating system goes, I think its amazingly fast and once you get used to it totally easy to use. I decided against an Android phone because of my Zune HD which shares a similar layout, and made an easy layout, plus my zune pass transfers over. :D

I'm thinking of getting a WP7 phone. Would you recommend the OS? It seems cool, I'm just trying to find one you can add extra memory into. 8gb doesn't seem enough to me and the 16gb are such a jump in price it kinda annoys me to the point I wouldn't want to get one.

I would recommend the OS to anybody who doesn't want the complexity that comes with the freedom of Android. It looks great and it is incredibly fast. My brother just got an iPhone 4s and we compared speeds and this phone is about equal, if not slightly faster on some functions. I love it, a few flaws, well one really, is lack of app support. If it ever gets a bigger piece of the pie then that will change, but as of now its OK.

Expandable memory is included, which is nice, but I've read that to install you have to reboot your phone to factory settings, which seems like a pain in the ass.

I just picked up Survivalcraft for $2.49 as my friend picked up minecraft for Android at the same time, this game is further along than Minecraft pocket, but its almost the same thing. Worth checking out.

FDS Mango is what WP7 should have launched at, its really great.

Been on iOS for a while now, and whilst i love my iPhone, and honestly couldn't live without it, i would love to get my hands on a WP7 device. I think next year will be its 'big' year. The OS looks great, and from what i can tell it runs pretty well too. Nokia are signed up, so a good combination of the two might be enough to persuade me to hand over my money once my contract runs out.

I'm thinking of switching to a Windows Phone. I have an iPhone 4 right now but for months now all the things I'm using it for (aside from regular smartphone stuff like calls texts and emails) is Instapaper, the Music app, and rdio. Also as an alarm clock. I checked and these apps are on the windows phone. And because I have an iPad now (Woohoo!) I can still use all of my previous apps on iOS on a current device I own. While technically I could still use my apps on the iPhone I already have, it's a bother to have to charge that phone for doing non-phone stuff.

However, I have no idea on where to start. Any suggestions on which model I should check out?

I wouldn't look past the Lumia line if you're looking at a Windows Phone device. The Lumia 900 is supposedly very nice and in my opinion, is one of the best looking phones i've ever seen. Same goes with the Lumia 800 (i had that). Very nice hardware, and the software isn't half bad. It's just lacking in a few key area's for me.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but i don't believe Windows Phone 8 will be a direct update from Windows Phone 7. Meaning, if you were to buy a WP7 device, you'd be unable to update to the new OS. If that's gonna be a problem then maybe hold out for a while.

As for the software. I enjoyed using it for the most part. The main issue for me was a serious lack of apps. Aside from Carbon (twitter client) there isn't anything i miss. Most of the Metro styled apps look great, but its a case of having to really look hard for something.

I use wp7 on a lumia 800. I love the phone but agree to the lack of apps that doesn't bother me though, so I guess that's a personal opinion depending on what you want from it. I'll also confirm bdh's comment about current phones not getting the upgrade to 8. They'll get a major update on wp8 release which will have a lot of the features such as resizeable live tiles and I think integrating Nokia maps.

But several major features of windows 8 are hardware based such as support for dual core processors and SD cards which is why current phones aren't being upgraded. So I'd definitely wait if you can.

I've never had an IDevice but I much prefer wp to android personally and when I get a new phone it will be windows .

Thanks for the warning there on windows phone 8! I'm going to hold off anyway until they release the next iPhone. If I'm sold on their upgrades I'm probably going to get that, but right now I'm seriously thinking of moving to windows phone. The lack of apps, I'm aware of, but then I don't use that many apps on my phone now anyway, and I have another iOS device I can use for those apps I may want to try, so I guess that's not really much of a problem for me too.

The biggest issue for me I guess is music, since my Library is on iTunes, and it sync wonderfully to my phone, obviously, and I keep tabs on play counts.

But then again, my friend has a Lumia (800 I think, it's not the 900) and I got to play with it a bit, and I really liked how it look and felt.

Forced an update to 7.8 today as my phone never seems to want to update of its own accord. I like the resizeable tiles a lot but it will take me a while to get them how I like them.

I really do like my windows phone, but it is rubbish that whenever anyone mentions a new app or game it is never on windows phone. I don't have ea problem with not having 500m apps as most of them are complete guff but I do feel I miss out by not having  major ones. I wish MS would pay developers to port their apps, as it seems to be the only real sticking point for most people.

I have a nokia phone, so i don't know if that's all it's available on at the moment. but to force update:

1. connect your phone to your PC and load up Zune software

2. go to phone>sync options>updates. If it updates, great! otherwise,

3. click update and disconnect your computer from the internet*.  it will say checking for updates, then eventually update available (can take several minutes), reconnect to internet and continue with update.

*immediately after clicking update, or wait a few seconds, it's different for different people. You may have to try this several times, and may get messages "your phone's up to date", "can't check for updates" etc. I find it works best if I check both options in the phone's check for updates options, and also put the phone in flight mode.

Also, I had to go through this three times, once was a nokia update, then an intermediate update, and finally the 7.10.8858.136 update, which is the 7.8 update. it's the 8858 that is the important bit. I stared out on 8773.

Good luck! I must have done it about 30 times.
