Windows 8

My biggest gripe is that I feel like I'm running two different operating systems when I use Windows 8, one metro and one desktop and occasionally go back and fourth.

Try that with a convertible laptop. One moment you can be using it like a laptop and the next as a tablet. I dream of unification.

I like the Win 8 apps in windows. Doing that from the start would have stopped a lot of complaints for non-touch users.

The start menu I'm not sure. I could be down with the same concept as the start screen but smaller but the way they have it in that screenshot with the list on the left looks weird. Obviously they'll keep working on it though.

edit: One thing I want to point out that has gotten more and more steam recently is that now that they've made a lot of stuff more M+KB friendly they really need to fucking update the icons so they fit the rest of the OS better. Hopefully they do that when they release this new start menu.

If they're trying to get them off XP, where else are they going to direct them except their current OS?

They have three current OSes, even Vista has another 3 years left in it yet, with Win 7 supported til 2020. Gives businesses plenty of time to look for alternatives without a need to jump on to Windows 8, which I'm sure with the recent leak from BUILD is going to be a mixed reaction given 1. "Hooray, start menu that everyone in the organisation is used to!" 2. "This is the third time the OS UX has been changed. If we'd been early adopters of Windows 8 we'd have wasted thousands in retraining and now a third time? Hmm, let's hold off till it's finished cooking".

Likely with the new CEO they'll redirect efforts a bit to stop pissing off their business users (already expanded Office over to iPad instead of keeping it WinRT only).

Supporting legacy OSes doesn't make them current OSes, no one in microsoft is going to tell anyone to go and buy vista just because they still support it. I'm not saying upgrading to Windows 8 is a great decision for a business, I'm saying that's the only one MS will promote.

Oh I certainly wouldn't be suggesting they push Vista on users. There's next to no need to present just Windows 8 as a viable alternative to Windows XP though. Especially given most folks still on Windows XP are likely there for reasons that' Win 8 isn't going to alleviate (e.g the support, familiarity, compatibility, affordability etc). On a consumer front you're just going to end up left with folks sticking to XP way past the already unhealthy life span.

Microsoft need to figure out if thier plan is to try and sell more copies of Windows 8, or to kill Windows XP once and for all. Not try and do both at the same time.
