Windows 8

Yes, but he's talking about Windows on a PC.  If you can do that on your Windows phone also then I'll grant that is pretty cool, but that's not what he's talking about in the video.

So this idiot is actually attempting to use Windows 8 apps on a desktop when no one does this? A year later he still hasn't learned?

the multiple apps will be of use to the windows tablet user(s). rather than desktop users, and it does look handy.  Everything in separate apps is the most annoying thing about mobile OSes and to have both the apps on the screen at once practically solves that problem.

I think "this idiot" is a Microsoft spokesman, demonstrating the new features of 8.1.   :P

You have to keep in mind that Windows 8 is not a desktop OS. It's an all-in-one OS. They're going to show off features that are usable on tablets, all-in-ones, laptops, touchscreen laptops, and touchscreen monitors.

Yes, what I'm saying is it's ridiculous this wasn't already a feature.

In Windows 8 you could do side-by-side or dock one on the side where it only takes up 1/4th of the screen. This just expands the options.

@TheFlyingGerbil: I've been running 8.1 for about 2 weeks on my desktop since my friend is a student who uses OSX. Can't tell you anything about the update process since I did a fresh install. There's no reason not to update though. If you don't like the start button there's this: http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.215

Update process was mostly smooth, just a bit long. It's also kinda weird how it got pushed through their app store instead of just regular Windows Update.

I have encountered a few issues, though. For one, I can't drag and move stuff on my desktop anymore. I thought maybe it was a problem with Fences but it persists even when I deactivate it. Is this a bug or am I missing something? Like, a new setting that got turned on by default? I can't really find anything.

Also, the OSD of MSI Afterburner seems to not work in some games now. I'm not sure how it would be affected but it was working in DmC prior to updating and now it's not. Seems to still work fine in Arkham City, though. So that's kinda weird.

i can drag stuff on my desktop and it stays where i drop it so it's not a setting that's changed for everyone.

I think they are putting it in the store instead of updates to prepare you for charging for updates in the future which they couldn't do if it was automatic via the update service.

That might be a general bug with 8.1. One of the guys I follow on Twitter had noted his overclocking utility was now broken locking his GPU fan to 1,500rpm.

Shit, that's annoying. Ever since My Documents started being taken over by a ton of programs dumping all kinds of shit in it, I started using my desktop as kind of a literal desktop. I have a ton of shit on it, kept organized with Fences. It's also my default download location, so I tend to drag and drop stuff from it quite a bit...

As for Afterburner, yeah, I figured I'd have to wait for an update or something. At least, as far as I can tell, it's only the OSD that's bugged. My fan settings seem to still be working fine.

I use Dropbox as my documents folder, basically. Anything big or less important can go to the second hard drive, and anything I'm concerned about from a privacy perspective can either go on the USB drive on my keys or in a random folder somewhere.

I do the same. All documents has is game saves and shit that gets added automatically. Maybe I should sync it to Skydrive or something since that has 25GB free IIRC.

I use Dropbox as well but mostly for school stuff so that I can keep my work synced between my desktop and my laptop. I use My Pictures for pics, wallpapers, gifs and such because it's convenient and doesn't take much space. Otherwise, I don't really bother with the default stuff. I changed the path of My Music so that it points to the partition where my music is but I rarely go there using that shortcut so it's kinda useless.

Anyway, the icons dragging thing turned out to be an issue with Fences, after all. They released an updated version that fixed it, so I figured it was time to "upgrade" from my torrented copy. I can't imagine not using that program anymore and I had been meaning to buy it for a while so this seemed like the time to finally do it.

Also, last night I noticed the Afterburner OSD was working again in DmC. Not sure what the fuck is going on there. It really wouldn't cooperate when I was trying to fix it, so it's kinda weird to have it come back out of nowhere. Haven't bothered to check if it works with everything again yet.

I upgraded to Windows 8.1 last night, mainly for the Wolf Among Us to work with my Xbox controller. I don't like to mash buttons on my keyboard if the game calls for it. I did find it strange how I had to go to the Windows Store. Then it asks you to make a Windows account, but in tiny text below you see the option to use your PC account.

Obviously there's the "Start" button, but all it does is goes back to the Start screen. After reading the last few comments, I'm gonna have to check out some of my files. I don't have a lot of stuff on my desktop yet, but it doesn't hurt to look. I haven't bothered to use MSI Afterburner yet, but I'll look into that as well.

  • 2 months later...

It happens to me mostly when I move my computer around from say my place to my parents place. So for me personally, I think just unplugging all the cables does something with at least whatever juice the computer has left*. Also, my computer mostly will restart itself if it get caught in that loop so its a non-issue in my 2-3 years of using this computer. Sometimes though it will remain in that state in which I just flip the switch on the back, wait 10 seconds and turn it back on. Good to go.

*So maybe its due to something with the PSU... I guess. -shudders-

You people actually turn off your computers instead of sleep/standby?

I turn my desktop off overnight.  I hibernate my laptop unless I'm planning to use it again in the next few hours, in which case I put it in standby.  I don't use my laptop very often though cause something about its battery interface is fucked up so it won't recharge its battery, meaning I have to have it plugged in in order to use it.
