sixrocket
Yeeeeeck, this UI looks terrible on a non-touchscreen PC. *Doesnt really add much besides slight performance enhancements and a new UI *Tablet interface standard on a PC *Following the trend, 7 was good therefore 8 will suck Sure, I might buy a tablet with windows 8 installed or one of those intel Tablet/Notebook hybrids, but no way is this coming anywhere near my PC. I smell another vista.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Just change the color to blue, instead of orangey-brown or whatever that is, and it will be Metro! I don't think Ubuntu is as flat as that. Also, the text at the left of explorer (the collapsible sections). Seriously though, you don't think it looks like Metro? Not at all. It looks nice though. But my first thought was overall it looked very much like Ubuntu rather than Metro. @Slime What makes you think it looks bad? Why would it look good on a tablet but not a PC? If it looks good, it looks good. I also don't think it's a tablet interface. It's a grid instead of a list. It's not a drastic change. fuchikoma
So IE 10 "Metro" on Win8 will not come with plugins... but Flash will be an inherent part of the browser. (I guess IE was getting too secure for a while or something... )

TheMightyEthan
But Aero's SO pretty.
deanb
There will most likely be some themes in there to add it back. Stardock look ready to provide a variety of fixes to Win 8 for users used to the look for the past half decade or so.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Oh, it looks so clean and nice. There's still transparency in play and looks like gradients as well. It's still sort of glassy but very tuned down and the overall look changed to be more Metro. Very easy on the eyes. Meanwhile: Not nearly as pleasant to look at. deanb
I'm sure Win 8 will look much the same once the taskbar is loaded up with a bunch of icons.
Faiblesse Des Sens
The big changes of dropping aero are going to the lack of the web2.0 style "glass" on the icons and far, far less transparency. That's what I was referring to. They're distracting elements, visually.
TheMightyEthan
I think it looks nice. I find the Metro style blocky and plain looking. It's boring. Referring primarily to the taskbar stuff. I actually do like the window frames, though still not as much as Aero.
Faiblesse Des Sens
iOS is pretty boring but no one's calling it ugly.
TheMightyEthan
I wouldn't call the metro look ugly, I just don't think it's especially nice looking. Aero is more pleasant to look at.
fuchikoma
I think it's... boldly rudimentary. Like, if they'd made Windows 3.1 look like that, they'd probably have said "we can't ship it like that - we can do much more! At least add a little 3D effect to some of the widgets!" But I guess it's kind of like the 2D game resurgence - they no longer have anything to prove, so they're free to make things as simple as they feel like. Personally I'd prefer Aero or even the WinXP theme manager. At least Metro looks... clean? To me, there's just no aesthetic tangibility - it no longer feels like a representation of materials and objects, just boundaries on a 2D plane. TheMightyEthan
I like the metro look better than XP. XP always looked to me like a toddler's toy in terms of the roundness and colors of everything. I don't think the metro look is bad, I just don't like it as much as Aero.
madbassman39
I was against Windows 7's big button bar at first. I changed it to look more like the classic version of windows, but after a while I changed it back to try it out. I love it now. Mostly because I think Aero looks so nice. Windows 8 doesn't (Edited after looking at this hours later. I shouldn't post in mornings) look as good as Aero, but I'm not 100% against it. I wanted something different now anyways, but I won't be getting windows 8 for some time, because I won't be needing a new operating system for some time. deanb
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/bloggingwindows/archive/2012/07/18/windows-8-will-be-available-on.aspx Arriving 26th October. Oh n since it's not really worth its own thread; Office 2013 preview release http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/officepreview Sports the new Metro look, but only the desktop side of metro, I've yet to load it up myself so unsure if it goes Aero on Win7. Faiblesse Des Sens
Why would it go Aero on Win 7 when their focus is on Metro? Anyways, I like the overall look, haven't messed with it too much though. Trying out Outlook which I previously thought was convoluted and a giant hassle to use. It's going better this time around. deanb
Because Windows 7 is Aero, whereas Metro is the Win 8 theme.
madbassman39
Trying to install it, it keeps telling me that in order to install office, I must shut down office, then it force shuts down and just stops... Whats the deal with that? EDIT: Downloaded the 64 bit version, worked instantly. Edited July 19, 2012 by madbassman39
Faiblesse Des Sens
Because Windows 7 is Aero, whereas Metro is the Win 8 theme. Metro exists outside of Windows 8. It predates Win 8.
deanb
And is office 2013 coming to zune or windows phone? No, it's windows 8 n windows 7. Only one of those is metro and the other is aero.

deanb
I know what Metro is. As I stated though, Office 2013 is not coming to zune, or win phone, or (as I forgot first time around) xbox, it is coming to windows 8 and Windows 7. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Aero
Faiblesse Des Sens
I was showing a Metro app that isn't even on Windows 8 and won't be. Elements of Metro have also appeared in their other products on Windows.
