Waldorf and Statler
How did Frodo get the ring at the beginning of the film? I always thought Gandalf brought it to his presence or the council had it at that point.
TheMightyEthan
Bilbo had it, and left it for him. Gandalf brought it to Frodo's attention, but never actually had possession of it.
Waldorf and Statler
Interesting that they left such a powerful ring with a hobbit that whole time haha. Man I need to watch those films again. I guess it's largely due to them being able to keep the ring unlike others.
Thursday Next
Well it couldn't be one of those as the last of them belonged to Thrain, which Sauron/Necromancer reclaimed when he imprisoned Thrain. Gandalf met Thrain in his imprisonment, getting the key and map. Â Â Â According to this: http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Rings_of_Power some of the seven found their way back to Sauron. As such Gandalf would not know where they are, so they could be the one Bilbo found. Also, there were apparently many lesser magic rings forged by apprentice elves. Gandalf alludes to this saying "there are many magic rings, none of which are to be taken lightly" (owtte). All I'm saying is that it's understandable that he wouldn't think that a ring is The Ring. madbassman39
Answer me this. If during Saurons first war the kingdoms of middle earth found that his ring was the one ring to rule them all, then why do the like of gandalf and the elves still wear their rings? Thursday Next
If you read the link I lunk http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Rings_of_Power it explains that the Elves can tell when Sauron wields the One and removed their rings to avoid being controlled. Also, they were made independently so are less influenced or some other plot device like that.
deanb
Interesting that they left such a powerful ring with a hobbit that whole time haha. Man I need to watch those films again. I guess it's largely due to them being able to keep the ring unlike others. It's more a case of security through obscurity. Should it be the "One Ring" then none of the higher powers can be entrusted with it, including gandalf himself (as he explains he'd probably be even worse than Sauron, even if he used it to do good). Given Frodo was instructed to not use it his immunity as a hobbit doesn't really matter. Â Well it couldn't be one of those as the last of them belonged to Thrain, which Sauron/Necromancer reclaimed when he imprisoned Thrain. Â Â Yeah I just mentioned the fact Sauron was gathering them, and that Gandalf hooked up with the last dwarven ring-bearer in Saurons captivity. Therefore he knew exactly where the last of the dwarven rings was. And yes it could have been one of the prototype rings, but it'd still be related to The One Ring. A magical ring is worth his time, even academically, checking out. Especially as he says "there are many magic rings, none of which are to be taken lightly". deanb
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/seth-abramson/dislike-peter-jacksons-em_b_2342591.html  Ton of spoilers in this, but basically it's a Tolkien nerd giving a bunch of smackdown to various unfavourable reviews (ones that attack the story, not the 48fps stuff). Saturnine Tenshi
Just saw the movie last night. I haven't been keeping up with the news, so I was a bit disappointed when I found out it wasn't going to be one movie, but I guess that's to be expected given the length. I enjoyed it. Waldorf and Statler
honestly people are hating on this movie like if the studio intended to release it after the Lord of the Rings. Didn't PJ try to release it beforehand but couldn't due to the rights?
deanb
JRR Tolkiens estate have been pretty dicky with the rights over the past decade. LotR was hard enough to make.
Waldorf and Statler
If anybody can do all these Tolkien films justice it is Peter Jackson. better let him do all of them and have them as classics in future years than somebody else with less talent or less passion over the subject. deanb
I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with Silmarillion from him too before he's done.
Thursday Next
IIRC it's Christopher Tolkein who's the dick. He hoards his father's treasure as Smaug does Thror's.

deanb
http://www.wired.com/underwire/2013/01/hobbit-contract-legal-analysis/ Â Something for the lawyers of the forum. A breakdown of the contract in The Hobbit. Also turns out there's a clauses added in the new contract which runs foul of a major plot point for the end of the film. From what I can gather it's very much a movie contract in the same way Swordfish has hacker in it, but a much better effort than "a lesser studio artist" may have put forward. Waldorf and Statler
Orlando Bloom has gained a lot of love from me. I used to rag on him when I was younger since he was basically the pretty boy in Pirates of the Caribbean but these two backstage videos have been brilliant.
