Well it couldn't be one of those as

the last of them belonged to Thrain, which Sauron/Necromancer reclaimed when he imprisoned Thrain. Gandalf met Thrain in his imprisonment, getting the key and map.

According to this: http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Rings_of_Power some of the seven found their way back to Sauron. As such Gandalf would not know where they are, so they could be the one Bilbo found. Also, there were apparently many lesser magic rings forged by apprentice elves. Gandalf alludes to this saying "there are many magic rings, none of which are to be taken lightly" (owtte). All I'm saying is that it's understandable that he wouldn't think that a ring is The Ring.

If you read the link I lunk http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Rings_of_Power it explains that the Elves can tell when Sauron wields the One and removed their rings to avoid being controlled. Also, they were made independently so are less influenced or some other plot device like that.

Interesting that they left such a powerful ring with a hobbit that whole time haha. Man I need to watch those films again. I guess it's largely due to them being able to keep the ring unlike others.

It's more a case of security through obscurity. Should it be the "One Ring" then none of the higher powers can be entrusted with it, including gandalf himself (as he explains he'd probably be even worse than Sauron, even if he used it to do good). Given Frodo was instructed to not use it his immunity as a hobbit doesn't really matter.

Yeah I just mentioned the fact Sauron was gathering them, and that Gandalf hooked up with the last dwarven ring-bearer in Saurons captivity. Therefore he knew exactly where the last of the dwarven rings was. And yes it could have been one of the prototype rings, but it'd still be related to The One Ring. A magical ring is worth his time, even academically, checking out. Especially as he says "there are many magic rings, none of which are to be taken lightly".

Something for the lawyers of the forum. A breakdown of the contract in The Hobbit. Also turns out there's a clauses added in the new contract which runs foul of a major plot point for the end of the film. From what I can gather it's very much a movie contract in the same way Swordfish has hacker in it, but a much better effort than "a lesser studio artist" may have put forward.
