Basically there are two types of British detective drama: 1) The eccentric and whimsical (and probably quite old) crime solving hobbyist. 2) The nihilistic, seen-it-all, married-to-the-job, divorcee and his team of younger, optimistic, not-yet-lost-their-faith-in-humanity rookies. Neither are exactly the kind of person you'd want to be or fuck. Oh and then there's the third kind: the eccentric, time-travelling, space detective sort of. deanb Posted April 18, 2011 Report Share Posted April 18, 2011 As for my choices: Jonathan Creek: Well worth looking up for any Americans who haven't seen them. It's a british show so the 5 seasons are quite quick to get through and since it's end it's had a few specials. It's about a almost savant magicians assistant (he makes the magic tricks and sets etc) who helps solve weird and unexplainable crimes. Usually with some element of methods used in magic shows. It's a "howdunnit" more than a "whodunnit" (many times it's an accident/suicide/no death at all). Also cool theme tune: Sherlock: I still dislike their Moriaty (though I hear they're getting a new one with the second season) but I really liked the modern remix to it. Steven Moffat has a knack at it. Watch Jekyll (a 6 episode mini-series from a few years back. What's cool to notice is leads from both of them are in The Hobbit) House: Does this count? It's not so much a whodunnit as a whatdiseasedoneit, but it follows the same formula; inexplicable crime(illness), brilliant but flawed investigator. It's a "what if Sherlock went into medicine" and it's not like you don't notice the House n Holmes reference unless you pronounce Holmes wrong. Of them all Jonathan Creek is the only one I watch for the howdunnit element. Sherlock cos it's Moffat and I really like the visual slick style and House for the chemistry between the cast. America as a whole doesnt care much for eccentricity or whimsy. We wanna see people shooting other people. Thats what makes crime interesting. Taking down the bad guys, not finding them first. Detective Sipowicz from NYPD Blue Talk about a flawed character. He starts off as a bitter, violent, alcoholic, even racist brute and...gets slightly better. He's unlike any other TV detective I'd seen before and all the better for it. An actual complex human being rather than an omniscient Holmes-type (not that those aren't OK too). Denniz Franz is such a great actor that it was easy for him to take over 'lead' after Douchebag Caruso thought he could have a film career. It's a shame I can't find a clip of Sipowicz's 'lie detector' scene, where he interrogates a man who'd beaten his wife to death, yelling 'Beep beep!' everytime the guy lies and subsequently smacking him round the head. Detective Simone from NYPD Blue How can you not like Jimmy Smits? 'Where's the beef?' as he would say. Columbo Lennie Briscoe from Law & Order Got to love his wisecracking. Detective Goren from Law & Order: Criminal Intent It's Vincent D'Onofrio's own sort of Sherlock Holmes. Enough said. The topic is "Who is your favorite TV detective?" not "Who is your favorite 1800s TV detective or PI?" Law & Order gives vital insight on how things are done TODAY. While you are checking the wiki, check out the years it was most popular. Now compare that with the number of police procedure dramas that popped up at around the same time. At least here in America, folks have Law & Order to thank for that. Then you have Jerry Bruckheimer to thank for turning scientists into cops. Bones is such a retarded show it just makes me cringe.
