Generation Eight

Over time it went from being an Entertainment Industry to an Entertainment Industry. Sadly.

This.

Early on it seemed like the goal was to maintain that video games "are still fun, please play more" because either kids were told to grow out of it or that it was nerdy. Now that video games are a well recognized and popular form of entertainment, the goal is "play this, it's exactly what you want now."

I mean, I know that Mega64 video is in jest but I can't help but feel depressed when E3 consists of "oh yay, more Kinect shovelware and facebook integration... whoopy...."

Well, MS fucked up the past two E3s by going KINECTKINECTKINECTKINECTKINECT!!!! God only knows what'll happen if they do the same thing yet again.

I know we all complain about what the Wii became but I do remember the introduction of the Wii was the first time I was really excited about a new console in a while. It seemed at the first reveal of the Wii that it might actually bring about new experiences in gaming. It's a shame that it only really amounted to waggle really. I'm not sure if it's being chained to a traditional display or what the problem is but as Ethan has already pointed out, the diminishing returns of graphics coupled with the internet tools to wring cash from gamers it seems like the industry is not very exciting right now. I honestly don't know what it would take to make a game that is truly exciting but I'm hoping someone out there is still looking for the next level of immersion.

The next generation is probably going to put more emphasis on free to play games, since a lot of them are working so well on the pc.

I wouldn't be entirely against the idea, although I wouldn't want them to get carried away either. For every Super Monday Night Combat or League of Legends there's ten Farmvilles and Smurf Villages.

So SE reckon that "

it's the biggest mistake they've ever made," for Sony n MS to extend this gen towards 10 years. I'm unsure if it's true or not, if these companies would have shifted, if other platforms would have risen regardless of the length of this gen. Though a compelling suggestion. You have got a few developers now rocking next-gen engines, obviously trying to give a big nudge for folks at MS n Sony to get a new console out the door.

Really Square? You have two PS3 games, Versus XIII and XIV, both of them announced years ago, in fact Versus was announced in 2006, and you STILL don't have a release date for either game. So why are you sitting there asking for new consoles when you can't even get your shit together on these consoles?

How can they say this generation is too long when theyve only released 2 games in the past 6-7 years? And they were both using the same engine and a lot of the same assets.

Compared to the previous generation when they sure as hell had more than 2 games.

And those games weren't even graphical marvels either. Don't get me wrong, FF13 looked fantastic when i came out and still does, but it wasn't pushing any boundaries. They didn't push the PS3 to its limit.

What can they do on a more powerful console that they cant do on a current one? I never thought of FF as something that NEEDS more powerful hardware to fully realize it's vision. FF13 could have been a SNES game if they wanted. Gameplaywise or even the scope of it didnt do anything crazy new.

I expect to hear this kind of ramble from Epic or Naughty Dog or even Bungie, but not Square Enix. They dont really have the right to demand anything from anyone right now.

I liked FF13 and FF13-2 quite a bit, but to others, prettier shit is still shit. Square cant survive on cg cutscenes and anime storylines like they did the past 2 generations anymore. People just dont care.

Tangential at best, but wouldn't it be great if MS, Sony and Nintendo got together and all agreed on one architecture for their consoles? They don't have to agree on overall specs or anything, just make their processors the same architecture. Think what that could do for cross-platform games and backward compatibility.

I dont count the non-Japanese stuff like Tomb Raider or Deus Ex, but even then those games werent groundbreaking technological marvels.

TR Underworld was at the very least a hd PS2 game and Deus Ex HR was a bit short of a full fledged AAA current gen game. A lot of animation was a bit off and the details were kind of missing on a lot of stuff. Still a great game and it still looked pretty good, but it wasnt anything near an Uncharted or a Gears of War graphically. Even Nier was really a PS2 game. It could have easily been a PSP game.

They dont make games that push the hardware, so why do they need new hardware?

Except it is a Square Enix game. That's like saying Call of Duty isn't an Activision game. Square Enix is more than just Final Fantasy now, get used to it.

That's great but we're not really talking about the non-Japanese games :)

Exactly! Even XIII-2 was graphically a step down from XIII. Their latest and greatest isn't even on par with the 2009 game and they want new consoles? Hm.

Who is "we"? You're the one seemingly wanting to steer the conversation to focus on the FF franchise.

I also don't get the concept of needing games that are straining the current gen hardware (of which there are more n more with each new release) to be wanting a refreshed generation. There's more to as new generation than just a bit more RAM.

And Square is the wrong publisher/developer for it. New hardware is supposed to bring about better more sophisticated AI, but Square has never been interested in shit like that. They like making really pretty, yet traditional games. That's what they do. New prettier coats of paint on things that people already liked.

Nothing theyve made this generation has made me think that with better hardware theyd make a better game. Every mistake theyve made has been their fault entirely. FF13 wasnt corridor-ville because of the hardware, it was because of laziness. Same reason Versus 13 or KH3 hasnt been made yet. Well, that and milking.

Go up and read, after you posted that article, it's pretty obvious that both Strangelove and I were referring to Square Enix's first party, Japanese studios, you know, the ones that are developed by Square Enix, and not Edios/Crystal Dynamics. :P
