Would anyone give a quick rundown on the outage on LIVE in 2008 when they gave you undertow for free (I didn't have a 360 at the time) for a comparison? E.g. how long did it last and why did it happen. Did they extend people's LIVE subscriptions. How worked up about it did people get? I see it didn't effect everyone so roughly how many? How well did MS handle it?

XBL was down for two weeks from Christmas weekend until after the New Year 2008, Jan 3 or 4th.

They gave us undertow for free.

I think that was about it.

I don't believe they ever stated why it was down. At least I don't remember hearing why.

Rumors were a DDOS, but according to engadget those were false.

I think what dean said is right, at the very least we should be able to at least sign in. Playstation Store or online gaming might not be available yet though. I'm thinking they're rushing that one update that allows you to use cross-game chat or video chat or whatever they announced when this mess happened, so that might be why this is taking longer. I'm allright so long as I can just log on PSN.

Like I said, the service never went completely offline, I think it was just a high amount of new users and traffic that were causing connection problems for people. I'm guessing a lot of people got Halo 3 for Christmas?

Getting Undertow for free was nice but I don't recall ever feeling really inconvenienced as clearly I'd continued playing online (maybe with the occasional problem?). There's that and the fact that, unlike now, I'd not really been purchasing a great amount of DLC or downloading demos and such.

That's literally a repeat of what they said before. Note they're not saying "basic functionality" (PSN, etc.), they're saying "FULL functionality", which they had already said was going to be restored by the end of the month. This bit of info isn't anything we hadn't seen before.

Todd Brakke from No High Scores:

A friend of mine had her credit card number stolen. They don't own a PS3 or Sony Online product, but I think we should blame them anyway.

XD

Does go along with the general opinion for sure.

So some guy decided to do his own digging.

http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:h9540GDnnIoJ:auth.np.ac.playstation.net:443/+auth.np.ac.playstation.net

That's the PSN on the day it went down.

The part to pay attention to is the bit that says:

Apache/2.2.17 Server at auth.np.ac.playstation.net Port 443

The current release is:

http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/new_features_2_2.html

tl;dr: The servers were running up to date software. The information that they weren't was second hand:

Spafford told the subcommittee that, according to security mailing lists he subscribes to, "individuals who work in security and participate in the Sony network" had learned "several months ago" that PSN was hosted on servers running "very old versions of Apache software that were unpatched and had no firewall installed."

It means that when the PSN was hacked it was fully up to date on the latest server software, and the articles running last week of "PSN wasn't updated for months" are based off some guy who heard off some guy.

As the guy pointed out, even if the games sites weren't willing to get their hands dirty with google cache, just reading the report the guy submitted would have enlightened them. Most likely one site half read it and ran a story, everyone else followed off them.

Aapche isn't the CFW :P

Apache is the operating system the servers run on. Same as your PC runs Windows. If you don't run the updates you're vulnerable to virus n attacks. Same with server software like Apache. The guy was saying Sony weren't keeping it up to date, therefore more vulnerable. The google cache shows that it's running the most up to date version, so there wasn't much in that way that would make them vulnerable to any old exploits.

I can believe that because I firmly believe that companies such as Sony don't bother keeping up with the latest in security and other attributes you'd think were unnecessary to constantly watch. :sherlock:

EDIT: Oh, it was the software itself, not so much Sony updating... (I really need to see if there are any new pages -_- )

After this intrusion, I'm willing to say that the industry is going to focus on online security for the next couple years. Microsoft and Nintendo have already claimed they have "secure" networks. However, if you ask me, I think that translates to, "We're probably in the same boat, so before anyone thinks of targeting us, we're looking into heightening security."

Anyone else having issues with Netflix today?

Yes, but it's not isolated to the PS3. My iPhone wouldn't connect, but for some reason it would work (barely) on my Xbox 360. I didn't have any of the "Top Picks for Gyaruson" or "Action" genre stuff available. Just "Instant Queue" and "Search". I read on a board that people have contacted Netflix and they have confirmed that there is some streaming issues.

Senator who called Sony out on the breach has gone back to compliment them on how they're handling it:

http://www.vg247.com/2011/05/11/u-s-senator-pleased-with-sonys-response-to-psn-attack/

Wait a second, a person who wanted answers and didn't rage at Sony for no reason? Am I seeing things, or are US SENATORS actually being REASONABLE now?

...where am I? Is this a dream?
