Halo 1

It's got the one most important elements that sets it aside from all the other Halo's, and most other FPS' in general: a good sense of pace.

Gameplay pace I mean. You feel slow and methodical- but not restrictively. The guns are weighty and it feels like there's a tangible consequence from firing them. This means you can take in the simulation; you're not constantly looking away and sprinting about, when something badass and cinematic happens, like that first fight on the beach in Cartographer, or a banshee crashing towards you and skidding to a halt feet away; you can take it in and really, fully enjoy it.

The Assault Rifle as well, man. That is like the gaming world's equivalent of the Pulse-Rifle from Aliens. Such a seminal, well designed weapon. Satisfying to shoot in all circumstances, just not the same in Halo 3 and Reach because of how fast they are.

I remember hating Halo 2 with a passion because it became a fast-paced flimsy piece of crap. None of the fighting or shooting of guns was satisfying, and the fights didn't feel like they had much worth or consequence. Halo 3 was better, but not by much- mostly the level design improved it I think.

Halo: Reach is great, but only because it fixes all the game mechanics and imbalances and makes it very fun- but it still doesn't have the heft and style of Halo: CE.

(I also played ODST a few months back- that was totally unlike any of the other Halo's. I recommend it if anyone hasn't played it, it's more like Deus Ex or Thief or System Shock, in terms of atmosphere and design. Much more story-driven and interesting level design/journeys.)
