toxicitizen
Haven't seen a thread yet about this one. I've only recently (as in a few weeks ago) started reading the Green Lantern comics, but I'm already hooked. I've since gotten much more into comics than I ever did before (started reading some old Batman stuff and some Superman), but the GL series have such a unique flavor to them. I just dig the alien diversity in them. The first trailer was met with pretty mixed reactions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5sN-8CxoL4 Then a few weeks ago, they showed some awesome footage at WonderCon and people started getting real excited. This footage is actually what made me want to start reading the comics right away instead of waiting for the movie. I decided I didn't want to be introduced to the character by the movie. I wanted to see the movie as a fan instead. That was definitely the right call, as far as I'm concerned. And then today there was a new trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLAyeGoFqps So much to get excited about here. First, the first footage of a guardian. The CG looks a bit off to me, but I was starting to worry that they wouldn't be in the movie. Then, around the 0:17 mark, an interesting logo can be spotted B) Should be familiar to fans of the current series. At this point, the only thing I'm not sold on yet is the looks of Parallax. I thought the whole evil cloud thing had been proved to be a bad idea by Rise of the Silver Surfer, but I guess we'll see. Hopefully it'll work in this movie. So, who's looking forward to this? staySICK
I'm confused, where did you see Parallax? ediit: ohhhh, is that was that cloudy thing was supposed to be? Also; where did you decide to start for reading?
toxicitizen
Yeah, it wasn't exactly stated outright in the trailers that the black cloudy thing is Parallax, but it has been confirmed that the entity is in the movie, so it seemed like a logical assumption. And I started reading at the Green Lantern: Rebirth series and then moved on to the current series (v4). I did some research and it seemed pretty unanimous that that was the best jumping on point. I've also been reading the concurrently ongoing Green Lantern Corps. I sorta took a break from it after the Sinestro Corps War story arc, though. Been mostly reading some Batman over the past week or so.
deanb
Black cloud? Parralax is the yellow cloud right at the start that attacks amun-sur,
toxicitizen
It's the same thing, Dean. Also, Abin Sur, not Amun If you look at the WonderCon footage (middle vid), at around 0:44, right after Abin Sur is knocked down by the yellow blast and escapes, you see the dark face coming at him. When you see the black entity in later shots, notice how there's yellow energy coming out of it. Though I'd really like to know why it is that whenever they have to represent a "big alien monster" in comic book movies they always seem to equate it to "big evil cloud". It's fucking ridiculous.... How exactly does a cloud look more menacing than this? Edited May 5, 2011 by FLD
Mr W Phallus
That picture confuses me, is that a foreleg? If it is why does it only have one?
Yantelope
As someone with zero knowledge of Green Lantern I have to say that this movie looks very strange. I'm not finding myself dying to go see it.
Mr W Phallus
It does look like they're throwing in a hell of a lot of plot threads. Wonder how non-comic reader friendly it will be.
toxicitizen
That picture confuses me, is that a foreleg? If it is why does it only have one? Hahaha, I hadn't noticed that but now that you mention it, the perspective in that pic is a bit weird. The legs are attached at the very end of its body. You can see the other one faintly in the background, on the left side of the pic. Edited May 6, 2011 by FLD

I need to get the trades.
toxicitizen
Okay, I have no idea how to embed this, so I'll just link to it for now, but Ain't It Cool News have posted a new trailer. What makes this one important is that it's the first one that really drives across the scale of the movie/GL universe. Even gives a crash course on the mythology. If you were on the fence because it all looked so weird, I think this is the trailer that might convince you to give it a shot. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/49728 I'll update with an embed once the trailer finds its way to youtube. BrainHurtBoy...2
Green Lantern has always been my favorite since I was a kid. I haven't been as excited for a movie as this one in a looooong time. The casting of Reynolds seemed off to me at first, but now I can see where they're going. I also love that they're really driving the 'Will' and 'Fear' aspects. Blackest Night is one of my favorite events ever. It captures the cosmic scale and style of the Lanterns so perfectly without being a silver-age cheesefest. That's why my hopes for this movie are so high. It seems like one of the first modern movies that can properly quantify the feel and style of comics, and for me, there's no better choice for such a thing than Green Lantern. Spider-Man involved a weird chrome-laced Spidey fighting a robot Osborn. The films were okay, but didn't do it for me. Thor was good, but got bogged down by poor characterization and a lackluster script. Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man 2 felt weird to me, and while I enjoyed them thoroughly, they didn't feel like comic books to me. Fantastic Four... let's not go there. And Superman Returns.... *shudders* Now... the Nolan Batmans... they are good, even great films in their own right, but as comic book films? No. The movies feel like movies. The setting is gritty. The Joker isn't cracking jokes, he's a manic depressive anarchist with a glasgow smile. There's no wham, bizz, pow. It's Morrison, not O'Neal. And while it makes for a good movie, I'm left disappointed and wanting more from a Batman movie. GL... if it disappoints, I'll be crushed. GL's my 4th favorite comic character ever, after Gorilla Grodd, Dr Doom and the Flash. That said, I read somewhere that a Flash movie is totally possible if GL performs well. So... GO SEE IT. WE COULD GET A FLASH MOVIE, DAMMIT.
deanb
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvqpNhtopTU Well here's the youtube embed. It seems to give away an awful awful lot on this third one.
toxicitizen
Oh, damn. Forgot to update. Thanks. And yeah, it does explain a lot of the mythology. But I think that was kind of necessary. Green Lantern isn't exactly Batman or Superman. And I think it can seem very strange to someone who's never heard of him before.
Strangelove
I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but................. The ring itself looks super gay. It looks like a plastic toy you get out of a 25 cents machine at the grocery store. The costume is also really weird. Im not sure if its too bright or too dark. its almost BOTH. It doesnt look right. The motion capture/cg is also really bad. Its awkward as hell. When you do cg of a human movement, it shouldnt be obvious that its cg. Jesus. deanb
No I'm meaning as in it gives away a lot of the movie, not as in catching folks up on who this guy is.
Thursday Next
It does seem to be giving away a lot, but I think FLD is spot on in his reasoning. GL is not one of the better known heroes like Spidey or Batman and he doesn't have a grander mythology to back him up like Thor, so you need to do a lot of exposition to get folk interested. Also, yes, the ring does look utterly stupid. Another hangover from the comic that perhaps has not aged so well and could have done with a redesign. I guess it's tough to draw the line between making the film feel relevant while remaining true to the origins.

I'm still not sold on it. I don't know... if it stands out weirdly for the whole duration of the film it could seriously damage the experience. Hopefully when watching the whole movie I'll just "forget" about it and stop noticing how it looks weird.
