help me find a cheap laptop/pc

My pc is fucked. My laptop is also fucked. I need to replace them with either.

My limit is 400 dollars for a laptop or a pc and monitor.

Honestly, i only want something powerful enough to play the Sims 2. Which from my crappy research is about 3gb of ram.

Basically last gen power since im not going to do "serious" gaming on it.

i looked on newegg like everyone told me to, but going by reviews, people who shop there dont buy premade pcs or laptops. There arent a lot of reviews for those so i can form a good opinion.

id prefer a laptop so i can take it to work, but price is my first priority.

im open to anywhere reliable. Newegg, walmart, best buy, target, radioshack, whatever. Online or an actual store.

Id really appreciate it. Thanks.

A quick browse on Slickdeals got me these. The bottom two are already dead but it shows how low they can go, so after tax and all, it should come in around $400.

http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/51009 (HP, $380 before tax or anything)

http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/50163 (Gateway, Bestbuy page doesn't exist anymore)

http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/50557 (HP, $100 price spike)

I personally have a Gateway that's somewhat similar to the dead one shown there. Its good for that price. Now for playing Sims 2, I have no idea if it can and if it

If you can hold out for a week or two, I'm sure something better will show up.

I can dig around a bit more here and there.

$400 eh? If you already had a monitor I'd lean desktop but for a laptop this was the best deal I found:

Lenovo's have a lot of Bloatware but once you spend an hour deleting all that shit they run awesome!

Here's a couple desktops:

or going in a different direction:

If you don't have a monitor, you can get a good CRT for free on Craigslist.

If you don't need the laptop portability, I'd definitely second what Battra said. You're going to get a lot more power for the money with a desktop PC. Free CRT's can be had any day of the week, and LCD's can even be bummed off friends for free/cheap if you're a good beggar. But CRT's are actually quite nice if you don't mind the bulkiness. Keyboards and mice are $1 at your local thrift store.

As far as the specs go, you can always skimp on RAM and hard drive space provided the motherboard allows for expansion later. Just make sure the processor is up to snuff, because that's often hard to upgrade in any way more than an incremental clock speed increase. I would avoid the Pentium dual-core or the older Athlons; you'll often see those in bargain deals. The later Athlon II's and newer Phenom's can be had pretty cheap, and I'd recommend them as a great, cheap alternative to Intel's ix line.

Anyway, here's the best I could find right now

Pavilion Slimline @ $420.00

PowerSpec @ $349.99

Hope you got a Microcenter near you! Not sure what their shipping rates are. Also, keep an eye on Gizmodo's Deals of the Day if they're still doing that. They pull from and aggregate a lot of those Slick Deals-type sites.

EDIT: Also, The Sims 2 is not very demanding at all. You could play it on a 10 year-old system with relative ease, so 2 gigs of RAM should be way more than enough.

Indeed. Of course, I've been using the same keyboard (an IBM Model M) for years and I expect to use it for the next decade or more! At work we just tossed out a bunch of PS/2 ball mice. I was tempted to take one out of the trash as it still worked but really, what do i need a PS/2 ball mouse for? :P
