Everyone is super stoked for the backwards compatibility... But I'm skeptical to see how far they'll go, or how ma y devs says "yes"... But seriously why do they need the devs permission for the disk based compatibility.

I still remember many of my Xbox games not transferring over.

But besides that I still wanna get an Xbone this winter.

How did they spin the backwards compatibility? I can see at launch, 'play your favourite games and new ones'. But adding it in now all I can think of is, 'these new games are taking longer to make than we thought, guys.'

So this popped on my radar as an Android thing but I thought the Xbox One implementation was kind of interesting:

I doubt it'll work as smoothly as it implies in the screenshots, would need a database behind it and I'm not sure such exist for games (maybe for MS games, but unlikely for others)

Anyone* play the game previews? Are they time limited (e.g. you can only play them For 10 hours or for one week after first playing) or can you play them as long as they are in the programme? I.e. Until they're (near) release.

*Does anyone even have an XO apart from TME and me?

It's a bit like steam green light from what I read. At the moment hey have ark: survival evolved, layers of fear, sheltered and the long dark. Guess there's only one way for me to find out what's up with them

I just got an Xbone for Xmas. Got the Gears/Rare replay /Ori 1TB console.....then forgot to play Gears on live til today. So I just missed being able to claim the gears 1, 2, 3, and not 4....Damnit.

Also....how do I claim 360 games in games with gold without a 360?(left mine at a friends house this past new years....12 hours away).

So, my dumbass left my 360 at a friend's house on new year's. Lives 12 hours away.

Makes me think about the Xbone's bc...just hope Microsoft sticks with it this time around.

Even more great games needing to be added to the list than the og xbox.

Also love how easy it is to dl dlc...just did it for FO3. And you can "select all" to dl at once. It's the little things I like in my tech.

And I wish Sony was doing the same, but since they're in the lead, remasters and psnow make more sense(to them). Even I'm thinking of grabbing a couple of the ps2 remasters(once they go on sale...)

Also glad how both Sony and Ms are being competitive with sales on their storefront this gen.

Hell yeah!

I normally turn my consoles on/off with the controller so was quite shocked when I first used the button on my XO  and it roared into life. This isn't my video and I don't know if you can tell but it comes from the console itself, not the TV. Can't decide if it's pretty cool or completely dumb but it's nice to have little extra touched like that, sort of like the extra gamecube startup screens.

Sounds awfully like the upgrade-able console concept I've talked about in the past. There isn't precedent for such a thing for some of earlier Nintendo and I believe Sega consoles. Quick whole console iterations are quite annoying for the consumer, you only have to own a Game Boy and DS' to know the pain. On the other hand, last generation (PS3, 360) was way too long with it getting too close to a decade for comfort. Smaller console upgrades might be the thing. I think the climate for these upgrades is different now than back with the SNES and the like.

Can it work? Hell if I know but not everybody is comfortable in owning and maintaining a PC to get the best performance (usually) out of their games. For people who are willing to dish out for a better (?) gaming experience but unwilling to tinker, this should be good. It might be a hassle still? The ease of upgrade-bility and costs are keys... the Steam Machines which is a similar (but closer to PC) concept doesn't leave much hope...

Regardless, knowing Microsoft, they might screw this up somehow. Somehow. Or maybe it'll be a slow burner like Steam was... and will have their own problems (#1: CS).

I could see it working if they actually maintain compatibility between mini-generations like they promise.  Games could have a requirement that you have to be on Xbox Level 3 or higher or whatever, and beyond that they could automatically adjust things like resolution/effects/etc based on how much power is available on your specific one.  It would get some of the scalability benefits of PC without users having to dick around in settings, and would also get some of the longevity benefits of consoles because devs would only stop supporting older versions as enough people upgraded to make it worthwhile, so any given version would likely be supported for a decent amount of time.
