TheMightyEthan
Sorry if I came across snarky, didn't mean to. And yeah, I don't know why I read your first post as though you were saying that was some special feature of your phone. I blame it on not having had my morning caffeine yet at that point. Thursday Next
I didn't infer any snark, just wanted to clarify why I referred to a phone in this context.
TCP
Ethan and Thursday: Hug it out, boys!I don't care too much if the 720 is always on (though, given that internet is not always available in all places, I think it's kind of a dumb idea, and the only people who will benefit will be Sony). But this guys attitude pisses me off. It's the same arrogant attitude that all of the XBox portion of Microsoft seems to have these days, and last hardware developer that acted like that, launched the PS3. Microsoft needs to humble up, as a big part of their success this generation actually comes from Sony fucking up the PS3 launch (a year late, 600 dollars, software). A good comment I saw said "I will deal with it... by purchasing a PS4".
deanb
Yeah, their attitude does kind of suck. And it's unearned too. Sony in launching the PS3 had the best selling console of all time. Microsoft's best ever selling console barely beats out Sony's worst selling console. They need to come out and really lay out thier vision with this, if they have one at all.
TheMightyEthan
I think MS is much more focused on the NA market, where their lead over Sony this gen is much more pronounced.
deanb
Which if you're planning an always-online console is the worst market of the three bigguns to focus on.
Waldorf and Statler
THANK YOU DEAN. I was about to say that. As a whole the internet in the US is shit. Companies are greedy, speeds are shitty and break down every 5 seconds. Google Fiber or w/e it's called is THE thing to hope eventually comes to the entire US. Because as a whole we are a joke. Also I agree with all the shit that's been said my niggas. Microsoft does not have at all the reason or the right to be cocky. Sony has more of a reason to be cocky right now. They made their console as close to a PC as physically possible as I can tell and indie developers genuinely want to develop for it. Even guys that previously said the PS3 was a pain in the ass are making shit for it (The Witness, Witcher 3). This lead guy of Microsoft might have just fucked over his career. Pretty sure the company will say he was giving them a bad name with his social life and will fire him due to unprofessional comments or some PR excuse. Faiblesse Des Sens
Why is Google Fiber the hope and not just non-greedy fiber in general? Fiber is coming to various areas of Seattle and it's already available in others through companies that aren't the usual big names. So far, Google has fiber in 2 cities. Big whup. Even guys that previously said the PS3 was a pain in the ass are making shit for it (The Witness, Witcher 3). I don't see the relevance. Why would they have a personal grudge? The issue was the cell processor was indeed a bitch to work with and now they basically get to work with a PC.
madbassman39
Why is Google Fiber the hope and not just non-greedy fiber in general? People call it the savior of internet because its the fastest residential internet available at the same cost that other fiber networks are providing. Google advertises gigabit internet for $70 a month. Verizon Fios has $75 a month for 50 mbps.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Yeah, but why would you need anything that high to begin with? How many people are going to notice the different past a certain point? For businesses it makes sense but not so much for consumers. My point being is that fiber is available. It's a matter of companies actually using the lines. Some big evil company doesn't have to be the one to do so.
Mister Jack
If I'm downloading a game that's 15 GB I'm certainly going to notice the difference between 1 gbps and 50 mbps.
madbassman39
If you don't understand why someone would want to pay less for faster service, then Google Fiber isn't for you. Just because you don't need the speed, doesn't make the slower internet for more money a better deal. FDS I have a question for you specifically, for $1130 you can buy a 13 inch laptop with an i5 @2.5 gh, 4 gigs of ram and a 500gb hard drive or for $800 you can get a 15 inch laptop with an i5 @2.6 gh, 8 gigs of ram and a 720 gb hard drive, which would you buy? If your answer is the $800 laptop, then you understand why having more speed with Google Fiber for less money is good. Also, America has one of the worst broadband infrastructures when compared to like economies in the world. Google Fiber is bringing the American Broadband to a higher standard for less money, when the other broadband companies are saying "Americans don't really want better internet." Mercurial
We don't even need gigabit internet right now because just about nobody supports those kinds of speeds. If we could get 100 mb/s as the national average that would be more realistic.
TheMightyEthan
If my internet was gigabit internet it would be faster than my home LAN.
Waldorf and Statler
Why is Google my savior? Because I love GOOGLE. LOVE THE GOOG. ONE OF US. LOVE THE GOOG. ONE OF US. I'M FEELING LUCKY ONE OF US
CorgiShinobi
But anyway, the world as a whole still isn't significantly connected to the Internet. It's suppose to be the World Wide Web, but about a third of the world even has access to an Internet service. http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm Where I work even, in a job where I send design proofs online, I would say I get 1 out of 20 customers who either don't use email or don't have Internet access. Mind you this is a city surrounded by rural towns, and you can't always expect people to have good access in remote regions. Also doesn't mean that the service they do eventually get is reliable. But hey, if you're not in the Top 10 metropolitan regions of your country, deal with it?
TheMightyEthan
Not to mention some people just don't have internet access at home, even though it's available. My wife, through her job, knows a bunch of kids who have 360's/PS3's who don't have a home internet connection.
TheMightyEthan
http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/05/microsoft-responds-to-creative-directors-always-on-console-co/ The fact that Microsoft took the time to respond, but still didn't deny the rumors, means it's about as confirmed as it can be short of a press release. Mister Jack
The skeptic in me still wants to believe this is all a hoax where Microsoft announces the always-online New Xbox and then when everyone hates it they bring back Xbox Classic and make billions.
Waldorf and Statler
I hope it fails so Microsoft realizes "Shit we fucked up", fires everybody in the Xbox division who doesn't know diddly squat about running a video game division, brings the ex-Sony guy from Microsoft Europe as the head of the Xbox division, makes him hire a good team, and fix the god damn mistake for the next console. Which would release in like 5 years.

TheMightyEthan
It's hard to imagine something more annoying than having the TV automatically pause when I turn my head away.
TheMightyEthan
I can't help but be skeptical of that vgleaks post because the grammar is so terrible (written by a non-native English speaker?), but it's interesting that it's saying the 720 will not be always online (or rather, will not require a connection to play local content). Strangelove
Is Vgleaks credible? First they said FFXHD would have addons, now this. It just seems off.
