Thursday Next
EA is probably already pissed with Sony since I'm sure a large part they dropped online passes is in planning for future consoles. Then the PS4 came. Nope. You may now remove your tin-foil hat. EA dropped online pass because it wasn't popular. Believe me, or don't. Whatever. Yeah if I "hurb" was part of my name I'd go with Major Nelson too.

Hot Heart
And voila! http://news.xbox.com/2013/05/qa Copypasta in case traffic has killed it. Update on June 19, 2013: As a result of feedback from the Xbox community, we have changed certain policies for Xbox One reflected in this blog. Some of this information is no longer accurate — please check here for the latest.Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.Q: How do consumers benefit by being connected to the cloud?A: The cloud makes every experience better and more accessible. Because Xbox One is powered by the cloud: Your games have more power available to create new gameplay, persistent worlds, and deeper experiences. Your system and games can update automatically, so you shouldn’t have to wait for downloads or updates. Your games and entertainment are stored and saved in the cloud, so you can access them anytime, from any Xbox One.* Start a game, movie, or TV show on one console and finish exactly where you left off on another. You can play multiplayer games with your friends, stream movies or TV shows right away, and enjoy the community and social features of Xbox Live. Xbox One can recognize you, log you in and tailor your home screen just for you. You can discover what your friends are playing, watching and listening to if they choose to share. These are just a few examples of how customers benefit from our platform being connected to the Internet. It brings the future of TV and games to our consumers—and it’s designed for today and the decade ahead.* Subject to content geographical restrictions.Q: When will Xbox One launch and in what markets?A: Xbox One will launch in markets around the world later this year. We’ll have more to share later.Q: Can I use my current gamertag on Xbox One and will my Gamerscore and Achievements transfer?A: Yes. Your current Xbox Live Gamertag will stay with you on Xbox One if you choose to keep it, and your hard-earned Gamerscore and Achievements will indeed carry over from Xbox 360.Q: Will Xbox One be backward compatible with my existing games?A: Xbox One hardware is not compatible with Xbox 360 games. We designed Xbox One to play an entirely new generation of games—games that are architected to take full advantage of state-of-the-art processors and the infinite power of the cloud. We care very much about the investment you have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future.Q: Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games? A: We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.Q: Will my current Xbox Live Gold membership work with Xbox One or will I have to buy a new one?A: You do not need to buy a new Xbox Live Gold membership. Your current membership will work on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.Q: Why require Kinect with every Xbox One?A: The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform. By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you.Q: Do I need to have a specific cable or satellite TV provider to watch live TV on Xbox?A: Our goal is to enable live TV through Xbox One in every way that it is delivered throughout the world, whether that’s television service providers, over the air or over the Internet, or HDMI-in via a set top box (as is the case with many providers in the US). The delivery of TV is complex and we are working through the many technologies and policies around the world to make live TV available where Xbox One is available.Q: Xbox One is a more powerful product compared to Xbox 360, but does it also use more power?A: By providing multiple power states in Xbox One, we’ve balanced energy efficiency with functionality. We’ve taken a completely different approach to how Xbox One consumes power. It only uses the power it needs at that particular moment for the task at hand.
TCP
That's good. Still a big fight ahead of them with that $100 difference. Not to mention their arrogant attitude, and the fact that they did try to put a bunch of anti-consumer features in their new system, has left a bad taste in many peoples mouths. I owned a PS3/360/Wii this gen, but I'm still not sold on the Xbone for nextgen. It'd take a few massive AAA exclusives that aren't Halo/Gears/dudebro games to make me want to bite. Even then....... I think I've got all my basis covered with PS4/Wii U.
FredEffinChopin
Necessary my ass. I'm actually a little proud today.
Vecha
While I'm kinda happy they dropped this nonsense(maybe I'll get one in two years). I think I'm still going with the ps4 for my console needs. So PS4/PC(and perhaps Wii U too).It still is 100 dollars more expensive, supposedly less powerful than the ps4, and has the fucking kinect forced on us. Popular Post Waldorf and Statler
This is a huge win for consumers. Think about it. As fun as it was to make fun of the Xbox failing completely this gen, we gotta be honest here: Xbox failing would've been a loss for us as they are the direct competition for the market share of Sony. I'm still going PS4 due to the power, price and studios who make games for Sony though. And by that I mean Sony studios and JRPG's Edited June 19, 2013 by Waldorf And Statler
Vecha
Yep. Totally agree. Just like EA is supposedly trying to fix their rep thanks to consumer complaints, this is another "Win" as far as illustrating that, yes, we can make a difference.Pretty big fucking deal that they went from, "We can't change it! It's already done! You aren't part of the fucking dev team you twat!(like with the AJ interview)." to "Oh....sorry?"
Waldorf and Statler
Yep. I can safely say the only time bitching didn't work was during the beta test of the new xbox menu with ads, where 90% of the beta testers were complaining about them and/or changing tiles and they did nothing. TCP
Agreed with W&S (SOMETHING I NEVER THOUGHT I'D SAY), a competitive industry is a good industry for consumers.
toxicitizen
This is great news but the part of me that was looking forward to seeing them crash and burn is a bit sad. But I guess even Microsoft aren't delusional enough to ignore such a giant shitstorm of negative feedback. I really hope no one buys into their "See, your opinion matters to us!" angle, though. Because that is complete fucking bullshit. The only reason they're backtracking here is because they realized they couldn't get away with this. If they thought for one second that they could still succeed despite everything, then you can bet your ass that they would've gone through with it regardless of consumer opinion. If there's one thing to take away from this is that Microsoft don't give a shit about their customers. That much became clear over the course of the current gen but this whole thing pretty much cemented it.
Saturnine Tenshi
Still not good enough for me. And I don't think it will be any time during the next generation.
Mister Jack
Man it almost sounds too good to be true. Now make the Kinect optional and sell a console without the stupid thing included and you might actually win me over, Microsoft.
deanb
They'll turn it on again in the future though. No fucking way did all their infrastructure and planning vanish like that. It'll be back. For one the way they're trying to balance out the 30-40% power deficit over the PS4 is with this "cloud computing" stuff. Sure it's all bullshit to work how it would need to, but without an online connection it won't work at all. It's a much needed u-turn, though only furthers to muddy their message. It makes thier past few weeks of insistence on this stuff all being needed look like balls. Heads will be rolling within MS HQ. It's kinda like the SimCity debacle, but EA have so far stuck to their guns.

So, pretend to turn it off now to sell more units at launch, then turn it back on later? That would just be begging for some massive class-action lawsuit, no?
Mr. GOH!
Cloud computing can be accomplished without the console itself requiring daily updates. In fact, the only real effect the daily check-on would have had is rendering offline games unplayable if you're not connected to the internet for more than 24 hours. That's an awfully hard thing to explain to consumers as a consumer-positive.
TheRevanchist
The one thing I wasn't clear about was the Kinect eye/ear. Will it still be watching me sip my appletini while watching AbFab? Does it still need to be on the entire time the XBone80 is on, whether connected online or not? I didn't see anything further on that piece of it.
