Waldorf and Statler
But it's like Minority Report! Only uncreative and bland and not working how it wants to pretend it does. Wait that's exactly how Minority Report is.
Mr. GOH!
Electrician's tape is a pretty good video surveillance countermeasure. Probably something similar would work on the mic, too. Edited June 24, 2013 by Mr. GOH!
TheMightyEthan
I was thinking some kind of cloth flap over the camera, so I could pull it back easily in the incredibly unlikely event I wanted to use it. The mic though presents more concern for me. *Edit* - Note to self, do not google "sensory deprivation mask" at work. Or at all. Mal
*Edit* - Someone should develop a little dongle that plugs into the Kinect port and just sends a fake signal of an empty, silent room, so the Xbone thinks Kinect is plugged in but it's just not picking up anything. That or stick an USB stick that can mess with the audio and video feed so it does the same thing as you said. There are some very cool hacks for the Kinect already so it doesn't seem to be out the realm of possibility.
TheRevanchist
A cloth or electric tape won't work, people. Supposedly, Kinect must be on for the console to function. At least, that is how it's been billed so far. By Kinect, they also mean the mic.

TheMightyEthan
They've said it has to be connected, but nothing they've said so far indicates that it actually has to be detecting you.

TheMightyEthan
Even though I have my own amazing headset, I'd say Xbone does win in the department of "included" headsets. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/21/xbox-one-headset-revealed Of course, I'm sure that's what also justifies the $499 price. Perhaps Sony's included headset is meant to suck to motivate consumers to buy the expensive PlayStation certified headsets? (Well, besides keeping cost down.) http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/25/xbox-ones-must-have-wired-headset-sold-separately/ "Xbox One does not include a pack-in headset accessory," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. "Each Xbox One includes the new Kinect sensor, with a highly sensitive multi-array microphones designed to enable voice inputs and chat as a system-level capability, both in-game and with Skype and other experiences." Popular Post Mister Jack
Yes, let's just blare the voices of the Xbox community out for everyone in the house to hear. I'm sure they have insightful, fascinating things to say.
TheMightyEthan
imo if you're on XBL with voice chat on, and you're not in a party, you're doing it wrong.
Waldorf and Statler
I think there's only one multiplayer game I plan to get next-gen anytime soon, Destiny, so for now the fact the ps4 comes with a headset, as basic as it is, vs the juan which doesn't is another incentive. Faiblesse Des Sens
You talk to the kinect. You don't need a mic.

Waldorf and Statler
@FDS: I'm already scared shitless of the Kinect. If I have to talk to it like a human being I'll just about have nightmares
Faiblesse Des Sens
You don't talk to people online like human beings? I was referring to using Kinect as a mic for in-game chat.
TheMightyEthan
But that assumes that 1) there's no one else in the room for the Kinect to be picking up (even headsets sometimes have trouble determining which voices they're supposed to be activated for), and 2) there's no one else around for the other people's voices to bother. Faiblesse Des Sens
If you're talking into a mic you're going to be bothering someone. But yes, that's an issue even with mics, so I'm not sure why that's a negative against Kinect. Either way my point was that out of the box both have online voice. Thursday Next
For me it's more that a headset means that no one else in the house hears what the other side says. As opposed to the VoIP being pushed through the main audio speakers.
Waldorf and Statler
Yeah. I don't know about you but the last thing I need is for the whole house to hear a squeaky voice screaming "All of you are a bunch of faggot campers n-words. I'm not actually saying n-word, Wally is just too afraid to use the derogatory version of this word"
Thursday Next
Not just that either. I like to be able to hear people over the game audio. I find that more easy to achieve with a headset.

The Xbox One might actually prevent this a bit considering it's so expensive so all of the 12 year olds won't be on it.
deanb
I don't know many 12 year olds that buy their own stuff as opposed to getting their parents to pay for it (pretty sure 12 year olds can't pay for XBL anyway)
