Faiblesse Des Sens
I feel like an article like that is just fuel for the anti-Microsoft hate wagon and nothing more. No shit it requires a day one update. Sony has functionality locked out of the box, too.
deanb
PS4 has some functionality missing until you update. Games work though. Xbox One won't even do your games without the day one update however due to all the DRM bullcrap they pumped into the console before turning their ship around (a little bit, cos the vibe still seems to be aimed at heading to DRMsville eventually. But I guess it depends what happens with next MS CEO.)

Mister Jack
Good luck playing any games on launch day.
TheMightyEthan
If you're talking about PS4, you can play offline without the day one update, so launch day has nothing to do with that...
Mister Jack
I'm talking about the Xbone.
staySICK
anyone keep up with the MoonlightSwami twitter fiasco? This guy preorders an xbox one from Target. They ship it to him early. Obviously, he's excited. Posts an unboxing video. Pictures, download size details, answers questions, even times how long it takes to boot to dash. Downloads the day one drm removal update. Then Microsoft strikes his YT videos, and bans his console. The rational person in me hopes that this is reversed come launch day, otherwise this is horrible treatment by Microsoft. He didn't sign an NDA. He got his console, if MS has an issue with anyone it should be Target. Which, undoubtedly, is coming to be sure. https://twitter.com/Moonlightswami/status/399079605543243777 http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/9/5083780/xbox-one-early-pre-order-deliveries
deanb
Yeah I'd heard of it. Does seem all a bit of an omnishambles on Microsoft's part. They just can't do any of their PR right with the Xbone.
TheMightyEthan
The most ridiculous part is that everything he'd said about the Xbone was positive. It's like they went "How can we take all this positive pre-release PR and turn it into a giant negative? I know, we'll ban him!"

Alex Heat
I think it's stupid on two levels. One level is Microsoft's approach to the situation and the other is the guy who did the unboxing video. I think we're mostly savvy enough to stop and go 'What could possibly go wrong for me posting an unboxing video for a system that I got a while before its street date? Oh, besides EVERYTHING.', but that's just me.
Vecha
Time to sell the Xbox division. Who should buy it? Zynga?Ha! Alex Heat
Nokia has declined to comment on the story for Bloomberg, but a Microsoft spokesperson released a statement to GamesIndustry International saying, "We appreciate Bloomberg's foray into fiction and look forward to future episodes." deanb
You joke on months of marketing ruined, but it is. They'd spent months trying to turn it all around and convince folks they'd given up on their plan of being DRM'ed to the eyeballs, and here's a guy whose banned from the console that he fully legally owns and has handed over quite a considerable sum for. It was one thing when game publishers tried to limit consumer rights with software licenses for thier games, but this is hardware.
Chronixal
I'm not sure what's worse; this move by MS or the number of lickspittle lining up to try and justify why MS was in 'the right' to do so.
staySICK
Major Nelson stepped in, apparently had a phone chat with the guy. The console ban will be lifted prior to launch, they laid out ground rules on what he can and cannot disclose and has been invited to the launch event. Twitter is amazing. TheMightyEthan
That's good. It's fun to hate on Microsoft, but I'd hate for that guy to get screwed over just cause he was excited for the console.

TheMightyEthan
That doesn't explain why the spindle is on the wrong side.
Faiblesse Des Sens
They're punishing people for being disc-buying luddites.
CorgiShinobi
Actually, I think I might prefer that layout. Any folded material would have its spine exposed, thereby making it easier to pull out said material. As for the disc, I could use my thumb rather than pushing on the spindle with my index finger. Then again, all you have to do is flip the case 180 for either preference with the only discrepancy being what is considered "right side up."
TheMightyEthan
I use my thumb on the spindle anyway. As someone right-handed, I feel like this would be more awkward to hold while getting the disc out.
CorgiShinobi
I'm right-handed too, though I do some things the "left-handed" method. I guess taking out games/discs is another one of those too. Still, if a game is going to have a bit of paper material to it (which is rather rare these days), I would prefer pulling it all out spine first rather than multiple pages. That's a really, really, really minor detail overall.
