I think at this point its just an obligation so they can save face.

They did bad last gen even when they bought exclusives from japanese publishers, this time they didnt even try. They already knew they were going to do terribly.

On top of that, the Japanese are pretty much rejecting home consoles across the board.

Honestly, I wouldnt have mocked or ridiculed MS if they hadnt released it in Japan. It would have been the sensible thing to do.

And if there are Japanese people who really wanted an Xbox One, I imagine theyre hardcore enought to import it anyways.

Its just lose-lose for them over there.

So... Xbox One and Windows 10 (with DX12) cross platform play... That's kinda huge, no?

Not sure how competitive gaming will be affected (are KB/mouse users allowed to mingle with those who use controllers on ranked games? Also, hacking concerns), but it sure would be great for co-op play. The more people you can play with, the better.

I really like the recent features Microsoft has announced, both in Windows 10 and Xbox One. They even have an answer to remote play... Sony needs to get their act together and release their promised features.

Edit:

I was just thinking, in addition the usual multiplayer, publishers/devs could offer a free game linked to your XB1 Id that could interact with your Xbox One game. Like the app for Watch Dogs, or being sort of a DM like I've heard about in some (or just 1?) WiiU games.

Doesn't have to be actual cross play. They could also link a map creator, for example. Some things, like world building, are probably easier to create with a keyboard and mouse. It could be great for the Xbox One.

I can already hear the bitching when it comes to FPS between controller and kb+m players. In all the times this mingling was allowed, an average kb+m player will dominate even the best controller player.

Remote play will be neat though. It potentially opens up a lot of screens. Sure it isn't meant for say me where I have a 5 years old PC that can still go toe-to-toe with the X1 but say if I want to stream a X1 game to my T100. It would be pretty damn great. I just wonder how the controller issue will be addressed though. Like say can I be away from my X1 and still pull it off with a X1 controller connected to my T100?

The streaming for the PS4 to the Vita or the Wii U to its gamepad makes sense since there's already an attached controller. I'm unsure about the Vita TV but I imagine a DS4 will be connected.

They've done cross platform play before n it lasted all of...what 2 games? And it was OS agnostic too.

Can't see them giving much traction, MS are pretty notorious reputation last few OS launches of being all "we care about gaming" and dropping the ball almost instantly. Never mind developer apathy, PS3 could do cross platform n that had Portal 2 n nothing else I can think of.

How exactly is MSFT supposed to support PC gaming more? I get that yeah they can bring more games over but what about on the OS level? I guess stuff like the recording features but really this complain has been around for like a decade and recording was not a deal then. What would people like them to do?

They're not to support it at all beyond Direct X, I think that's pretty much the point. They big themselves up as big PC Gaming guys then come out with some piss poor announcement, in this case Fable Legends, which of course is something PC gamers were hugely jealous of.

Oh and the ability to do the exact opposite of a Steambox/Shield/etc in letting you stream from your living room console to your desktop PC. Maybe there's a use case there, but I've never heard anyone at all request that kind of functionality, always been on the "playing PC stuff where you play your console stuff" and market solutions built around that.

So yeah, just go "here's Direct X n+1, it does this this and this, enjoy your games".

The only thing stopping cross platform play on hosted (non peer to peer) servers is a filter that puts players in like hardware severs. I've played early (very early) titles that could play (on a local network) xbox v ps v pc.

Cross platform play is the easiest thing in the world. The only hard bits are getting marketing to part with their walled garden and getting PR prepped for when console A players trounce console B players every time so that people don't think that the reason for that is that console A is superior.

I don't have an Xbox One, but I can see myself getting one in the future.

I was wondering though if I can sub to Xbox Live to get the free Games with Gold offers. Is there a way to subscribe to Gold without a console and just get the games? I don't mind dropping $60 now to just collect the free games (which I heard I can keep forever - or however long forever is in our digital world).

You can register Gold through the Xbox site I believe, but I'm not 100% sure on whether you can claim the Games with Gold without actually having logged in on an Xbone.  I know that at least once you have logged in on an Xbone you can claim the free games through the website.
