Nexus
13th: Red Dead Redemption PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 Total Points: 39 Number of number 1 votes: 0 Number of votes: 5 (Papu, TheMightyEthan, TheCowboyPoet, Yantelope, Nexus) Red Dead Redemption is an open world action-adventure western video game, developed by Rockstar San Diego and published by Rockstar Games. It was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on May 18, 2010. It is a spiritual successor to 2004's Red Dead Revolver. Most of the game's story takes place in the year 1911, during the decline of the American Old West. The game follows John Marston, a former outlaw, while he sets out to hunt down his former gang members. Marston's wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a bounty hunter. Having no other choice, he sets out to bring his three former gang members to justice. Upon its release, Red Dead Redemption was met with high critical acclaim averaging 95% on both review aggregate websites Metacritic and GameRankings, making it one of the highest rated video games for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on both websites. It won several "Game of the Year" awards. Reviewers praised the visuals, music, open world gameplay, and the story. According to the NPD Sales Group, Red Dead Redemption sold over two million units in the combined months of May and June. Nexus says:"I love RDR. GTA with added horses. The story is phenomenal, the characters are all awesome-the protagonist and antagonist are great, and the supporting cast rock. Gameplay is fun, soundtrack is good, and it's very pretty. One of the best games released recently." Edited May 17, 2011 by Nexus
SomTervo
In general SH2 isn't the scariest- but there are moments that have scared me more than anything. Amnesia has scared me more consistently overall, but it has never reached the peaks of SH2 (mostly some of the Pyramid Head moments). However, the reason SH2 is so timeless is that it is so much more than just a great horror- it's a great story, and the most tied together narrative in videogaming history (imho). I've never felt so satisfied in terms of story after finishing a game, as I was when I finished SH2. Strangelove, fucking play that shit. And Amnesia. Metal Gear Solid is overrated. Naaaah man. It receives just as much recognition as it should; it's a great game, and hugely important. I say this as MGS was the first game to have a great sense of cinematography- backed up by the engine that was incredible for the time- and a great contemporary relevance and reference to cinema. I still argue it has better camera angles than a lot of great films, and a plot that stands up to most films in general (though the story and script can be a bit too OTT). On top of this it was still a fucking good game that put the stealth genre on the map under a huge 'YOU ARE HERE' sign (before, it was just a small red dot). Really formulaic, but really amazing (I'd argue it's better than a lot of the later MGS titles because it's so perfectly formulaic. It's like the Tetris of stealth games, though tbh that'd go to the earlier Metal Gears').

Nexus
12th: Tetris Everything you can think of Total Points: 40 Number of number 1 votes: 1 (DukeofPwn) Number of votes: 5 (Cyber Rat, DukeofPwn, Deanb, jayc4life, Johnny) Tetris is a puzzle video game originally designed and programmed by Alexey Pajitnov in the Soviet Union. It was released on June 6, 1984, while he was working for the Dorodnicyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Science of the USSR in Moscow, Russia. He derived its name from the Greek numerical prefix tetra- (all of the game's pieces, known as Tetrominoes, contain four segments) and tennis, Pajitnov's favorite sport. The Tetris game is a popular use of tetrominoes, the four element special case of polyominoes. Polyominoes have been used in popular puzzles since at least 1907, and the name was given by the mathematician Solomon W. Golomb in 1953. However, even the enumeration of pentominoes is dated to antiquity. The game (or one of its many variants) is available for nearly every video game console and computer operating system, as well as on devices such as graphing calculators, mobile phones, portable media players, PDAs, Network music players and even as an Easter egg on non-media products like oscilloscopes. It has even inspired Tetris serving dishes and been played on the sides of various buildings, with the record holder for the world's largest fully functional game of Tetris being an effort by Dutch students in 1995 that lit up all 15 floors of the Electrical Engineering department at Delft University of Technology. While versions of Tetris were sold for a range of 1980s home computer platforms, it was the hugely successful handheld version for the Game Boy launched in 1989 that established the game as one of the most popular ever. Electronic Gaming Monthly's 100th issue had Tetris in first place as "Greatest Game of All Time". In 2007, Tetris came in second place in IGN's "100 Greatest Video Games of All Time". It has sold more than 70 million copies. In January 2010, it was announced that Tetris has sold more than 100 million copies for cell phones alone since 2005. Nexus says:"Iconic music. Iconic game." It is the first 3D game in the Metroid series, and is classified by Nintendo as a first-person adventure rather than a first-person shooter, due to the large exploration component of the game. In North America, it was also the first Metroid installment to be released since Super Metroid in 1994; in all other markets, it was released after Metroid Fusion. Metroid Prime is the first of the three part Prime storyline, which takes place between the original Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus. Like previous games in the series, Metroid Prime has a science fiction setting, in which players control the bounty hunter Samus Aran. The story follows Samus as she battles the Space Pirates and their biological experiments on the planet Tallon IV.

Nexus
9th: Half Life PC, PlayStation 2 Total Points: 51 Number of number 1 votes: 1 (mergedwarrior) Number of votes: 5 (p4warrior, Cyber Rat, Vargras, Yantelope, mergedwarrior) Half-Life is a science fiction first-person shooter video game developed by Valve Software, the company's debut product and the first in the Half-Life series. First released by Sierra Studios on November 19, 1998, the game was also released for the PlayStation 2 on November 14, 2001. In Half-Life, players assume the role of Dr. Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist who must fight his way out of a secret underground research facility, whose research and experiments into teleportation technology have gone disastrously wrong. Valve, set up by former Microsoft employees, had difficulty finding a publisher for the game, with many believing that it was "too ambitious" a project. Sierra On-Line eventually signed the game after expressing interest in making a 3D action game. The game had its first major public appearance at the 1997 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Designed for Windows, the game uses a heavily modified version of the Quake engine called GoldSrc. On its release, critics hailed its overall presentation and numerous scripted sequences, and it won over 50 PC Game of the Year awards. Its gameplay influenced the design of first-person shooters for years after its release, and it is widely considered to be one of the greatest computer games of all time. As of November 16, 2004, Half-Life has sold eight million copies. As of July 14, 2006, the Half-Life franchise has sold over 20 million units. Half-Life was followed by the 2004 sequel Half-Life 2, which also received critical acclaim. Half-Life, its cultural impact, community mods and sequels has spawned a large fanbase and cult following, especially in PC gaming.
SomTervo
Good call P4. Nexus, you're an absolute champ. We should draw it all up into a big chart type thing, give it a vagazzle, and pop it under it's own heading on the main page. Maybe make it an annual event? This Top 10 is shaping up great, too. FMW
Well, my #1 has come and gone. I made 10th place. Part of me is pleased to see that I am not alone in my appreciation of the game. Part of me is disappointed that others don't see the same value that I do. However, my real emotional response is being stored up for later when some game I don't like gets put in a higher slot. I can just feel it inside of me, I'm gonna rage so hard... Saturnine Tenshi said we each get to derail the thread once with a "XXXX is overrated" rant, right? I'm looking forward to mine! Half life is all right though. It's different and not to my tastes, but worthy. It's allowed to be ahead of Metroid Prime. I guess if the rest of the eight are all worthy too then I'll just need to go back and rant about Halo... ho hum.
Nexus
Joint 7th: Metal Gear Solid 3 PlayStation 2, Nintendo 3DS Total Points: 53 Number of number 1 votes: 1 (Papu) Number of votes: 5 (Papu, MetalCaveman, jayc4life, kenshi_ryden, SanaEquiesterer) Metal Gear Solid 3 is an award winning stealth action video game directed by Hideo Kojima. Snake Eater was developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and published by Konami for the PlayStation 2, and was released on November 17, 2004 in North America; December 16, 2004 in Japan; March 4, 2005 in Europe; and on March 17, 2005 in Australia. The game, which serves as a prequel to the entire Metal Gear series, was followed by two direct sequels titled Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Set in the Cold War-era Soviet Union, the story centers on FOX operative Naked Snake as he attempts to rescue a weapons designer and sabotage an experimental superweapon. While previous games were set in a primarily urban environment, Snake Eater adopts a 1960's Soviet jungle setting, with the high tech, near-future trappings of previous Metal Gear Solid games being replaced with the wilderness. While the setting has changed, the game's focus remains on stealth and infiltration, while retaining the series' self-referential, fourth wall-breaking sense of humor. The story of Snake Eater is told through numerous cut scenes and radio conversations. Chrono Trigger SNES, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, Virtual Console, Mobile Phones Total Points: 53 Number of number 1 votes: 1 (SanaEquiesterer) Number of votes: 6 (p4warrior, Cyber Rat, Johnny, Frosted Mini-Wheats, Aki, SanaEquiesterer) Chrono Trigger is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995. Chrono Trigger's development team included three designers that Square dubbed the "Dream Team": Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series; Yuji Horii, a freelance designer and creator of Enix's popular Dragon Quest series; and Akira Toriyama, a freelance manga artist famed for his work with Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball. Kazuhiko Aoki produced the game Masato Kato wrote most of the plot, while composer Yasunori Mitsuda scored most of the game before falling ill and deferring remaining tracks to Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu. The game's story follows a group of adventurers who travel through time to prevent a global catastrophe. Square re-released a ported version by Tose in Japan for Sony's PlayStation in 1999, later repackaged with a Final Fantasy IV port as Final Fantasy Chronicles in 2001 for the North American market. A slightly enhanced Chrono Trigger was released for the Nintendo DS on November 25, 2008, in North America and Japan, and went on sale in Australia on February 3, 2009 and in Europe on February 6, 2009. The game was never released in PAL teritories before the Nintendo DS version. Chrono Trigger was well-received by reviewers and commercially successful upon release; it is now considered one of the greatest games of all time. Nintendo Power magazine described certain aspects of Chrono Trigger as revolutionary, including its multiple endings, plot-related sidequests focusing on character development, unique battle system, and detailed graphics. Chrono Trigger was the third best-selling game of 1995, and the game's SNES and PSX iterations have shipped 2.65 million copies as of March 31, 2003. Chrono Trigger DS has sold 790,000 copies as of March 31, 2009. Square has announced that Chrono Trigger will be ported to mobile phones, Virtual Console, and PlayStation Network in 2011.
