Which greats? I remember New Zanzibar was decent, but still a bit convoluted... A couple towards the end were decent, specifically when Brutes and Elites were fighting...

Still, I don't think any reached the quality of Halo: CE. Silent Cartographer, the one with the Flood, the last two levels... All incredible and sooo memorable.

For multiplayer maps, I would agree though, Halo 2 had some greats.

On-topic: I'm jonesing for some KOTOR so badly now, man.

The opening of the game is great. The space station and the streets (which are actually two levels) make for a great opening. The fight across the second Halo was cool and I liked some of the stuff involving the Arbiter. Going after the heretic leader and flying Banshees (there and in the last level) was pretty fun.

I guess they're all pretty memorable for me because I played them in co-op on Legendary (where any death means going back to a checkpoint) but I felt the moment-to-moment gameplay (that Bungie seem to think is their hallmark) was actually stronger than the first, even if only slightly.

2 was lacking in some of the open environments that CE did so well though.

Maybe if it were actually explained in the game in such a concise and straightforward manner, many of us wouldn't be confused about it. The way a game tells a story is just as important as the strength of the plot itself.

This. The content of the plot is fairly straight-forward, the actual delivery is a convoluted, nearly incomprehensible mess.

Yeah, that was the other thing that I hated about Halo 2 was I thought it was going to be a defend earth game and you were off of earth after 2-3 hours.

Yeah, and then as soon as you come back and you're like "Fuck yeah, motherfuckers, it's on, you fucking Covenant are going DOWN!" the game ends.

I saw a video interview before Halo 3 came out where the interviewer asked one of the Bungie guys about people throwing their controllers in rage at the end of Halo 2, and the Bungie guy said "I don't think anyone threw their controller with rage, they may have dropped it in amazement..."

No, I fucking threw my controller in rage. Literally. And I don't usually do that at games.

Halo 2 felt like playing with actiion figures. It was so soft and clean.

Or maybe it was just me. I played Halo 1 way too much to be accepting of any change in the feel of the game.

Halo 2 was also the first game i played with regenerating health. For some reason i felt insulted. I hated it. Since every game has it now ive learned to accept it.

Ditto.

I heard that comment by the Bungie guy as well and thought "you're a complete idiot".

I can third that sentiment. I was sitting on my bed, controller in hand. When Chief says "I'm going to finish this fight" I said to myself, "Fuck yeah!"

Then, the credits roll.

I very calmly took a pillow off of my bed, laid it on the floor, then proceed to throw my controller into it until I was worried that the integrity of the pillow had given up.

Also, fuck playing as the Arbiter. Fuck Gravemind. Fuck Tartarus on Legendary. Fuck every story element in that game. God that game is a mess, but somehow it managed to improve so much from the original.

I am sad that the original Super Mario Bros didn't make it on the list. I mean, I know it's not the best game ever made, but without it where would we be right now? I don't know, but I would bet my life that the landscape of gaming would be completely different if Mario never showed up. Also, no love for the original Zelda? I am shock. But not Bioshocked, because that didn't make either. Seriously people, do you guys hate great/groundbreaking games?

*EDIT*

Nice job, Nexus. This was fun.

You put SMB as number one so yeah I'm a bit surprised that it didn't make it though your other choices may have been it's undoing in pushing it down. You do have KOTOR on your list.

As for me I either went for games that I've put dozens if not hundreds of ours into, so I must of enjoyed them, or I'm cool with going back n picking up to play again many times. SMB n Bioshock don't really do that for me.

Again, this isn't necessarily a list of groundbreaking games, or even of the 50-ish best games in existence, but merely the games that members of this board enjoy the most. I loved Bioshock when I played it, but honestly the enjoyment faded pretty quickly after the (awful) ending cinematic rolled. I'm slogging my way through the second game now.

As for Super Mario Bros, I believe SMB3 and World made the list, games which stood on the shoulders of the first and ended up, whether because of our respective ages at the time or their superiority I don't know, capturing the imaginations and memories of more members of TAY than the first game did, as earth-shattering as it was at the time of its release.

Bioshock is weird.

Ill defend it til I die against people who say it isnt one of the greatest games ever made, but.....I cant replay it to save my life. Ive tried, but theres just something about it. I dont ever want to play it again after that first time.

Its sad, but Bioshock 2s gameplay was a lot better. If only there was some way to update Bioshock 1 with Bioshock 2s gameplay.

If youre a regular videogame player, its fine. if youre a hardcore fps player, its awful.

Im regular. I dont give two shits about deadzones, twitches, or any of that shit people talk about. As an average fps player the only thign i noticed was that the controls were a little shaky. It was a bit innacurate, but not to the point where its unplayable.

Other than setting some traps and using the environment to your advantage, there wasn't too much that separated Bioshock from other shooters as far as gameplay went, I think.

I love art deco, so I found the design compelling and I think that was a part of the reason that kept me going to the end. But during the entire game I was brooding over how much content was carried over from System Shock 2, and recalled all the interviews I read about how it was dumbed-down to be more like an FPS.

Yeah, the aiming felt wonky to me, both on PC and 360. It's nothing specific that I can point out and say "this is what's wrong with it", it just felt very wrong, to the point I couldn't make myself play it. It was very sad because the atmosphere was amazing and I wanted to continue exploring Rapture, but every encounter with an enemy was an exercise in tedium and irritation.
