Dragon's Dogma

I saw a preview of this game in the most recent Edge magazine. I looked at it, looked at the screens, and thought "this looks like shit".

However, after giving the article a good read, it's now one of my most anticipated games of 2012. It's Monster Hunter meets Oblivion.

It's a 3rd person action adventure game set in a fantasy world. It's by the Capcom team who did Devil May Cry. They're used to RPG's or action games in linear settings- so they're making this game open world to push their skills. They know fantasy, and they know good combat systems.

However, past customizing your character, and choosing a class (warrior, strider: 'rogue-type', and mage)- there is no RPGing. It's an action game set in an open-world, with dynamic battles featuring fantasy creatures from Goblins to Griffins to Dragons. There are towns and settlements which fully-voiced NPC's have 24-hour life cycles in.

See a huge creature attacking a distant village? You can travel to it, and take it down. Or you could not, and just go adventuring in the country. Your call. Or you could go to a town and find some quests. To take down larger enemies, there is no set path, and no RPG-like hacking away at their ankles to reduce their health. In Dragon's Dogma, you (in the style of Shadow of the Colossus) climb limbs and stab them as they dynamically flee and try to shake you off- your 3 AI teammates can join in, jumping on or using ranged attacks from below.

You have these 3 AI teammates chosen from a wide selection, to help you out. They have unique skillsets and styles. I reckon it's likely there'll be multiplayer co-op where friends can play the AI, but it's not confirmed.

The mages are like something from Magicka in that they have no magic limit but they have different types and longer they hold a button the more powerful it is. They can imbue other party member's weapons with special effects.

Eurogamer article on it.

It sounds good, and seeing as it's by DMC's team, it's got a good focus on combat and a gritty, down-to-earth medieval approach to a fantasy action game.

Aw. You had me at "Monster Hunter", but then I read up on it and it's consoles only.

Hopefully, since it's Capcom, we'll have a chance of seeing it on PC soon. I know of a great number of PC gamers wanting a localized version of the Monster Hunter MMO for the NA region, but I think this will suffice as well. In addition, the engine they're making this on is the same as the one used for RE5 and Lost Planet 2 (both of which have PC ports).

Well, one can hope anyways.

Yeah. I mostly like the look of it for a 'non-hardcore' fantasy game. I've had dreams of an open-world action game that was fantasy, not IRL like most of those are. This looks like it'll fit me nicely.

I'm feeling that it's definitely Capcom's answer to Demon's Souls, after how much of a success that was. Even though this isn't going for a hardcore audience, the general feeling is similar. Simulation over scripting, and the like. I'm hoping there'll be large battles with lots of enemies, ala the old PS2/Xbox Lord of the Rings: Two Towers game, that was actually seriously fucking good "hack 'n' slash in huge battles" fare.

@Pirand: Yeah I was surprised it wasn't going to be on PC. After I read the article I was thinking it'll probably be developed on PC as it's base, but hey, I was wrong. That's a good engine, and indeed should be able to support good porting.

I loved that. Although, I think it was the RotK one that had co-op and bigger battles and could actually be quite tough at points.

Two Towers one may have had co-op but I don't remember that. Pretty decent challenge as Legolas as well; actually had to be careful with combos and such.

Exactement- especially as you guys are saying it's better :P

I really hope they announce some MP for DD soon. Would be off the hook questing with homies. At least we'll have Dark Souls to tide us over till 2012- although by "tide us over" I actually mean "fuck us in the ass with a pineapple", though we'll still enjoy it.

the NPC's sound annoying as hell.

Yeah. I think that was in the Eurogamer preview I OP'd: apparently they repeatedly shout the same thing once every few seconds or so for minutes at a time, and worse, the words come up in a little embedded box at the side of the screen, so there's a massive list of the same phrase over and over.

Doesn't sound like something that'd be particularly difficult to fix in the next year or so though :P

Also, nice post. That video was sexy. Looks fucking good.

Hate to necro on this (nearly a year ago when this thread was last posted on, Christ) but this video shows some pretty promising elements. And it's an hour long, so comprehensive as fuck.

I love how it seems to be consolidating lots of big things in the fantasy game genre: hack n slash action of DMC etc, open world/ universe of elder scrolls, RPGS/ strategy elements and level design of Demons/ Dark Souls, mixed up enemy types and mechanical elements of Shadow of the Colossus and Zelda/ generic fantasy fare.

Not to mention odd little details like base-jump style moves when falling from great height, like Just Cause 2. I love the bit where he grabs on to a harpy (or something)'s legs, it flies him away, then he tries to drop from great heat onto the troll/ cyclops thing. That leg-grab move is ripped straight out of Shadow of the Colossus, but employed in a totally fresh way.

Not at all, man. The comparisons I made are:

1.) It seems like it might be Capcom trying to make a rival to Demons/Dark Souls, but it's not really that similar at all.

2.) There are a few structural things, an emphasis on quality sword/magic play, and RPG/item systems look very similar.

Aside from that, Dragon's Dogma looks like it's more large scale scrappy battles, adventure and hack 'n' slash. Not hardcore enemies, hardcore health/mana/item management, and hardcore level knowledge. The guy is against lots of enemies sometimes in that video, but you have at least 2 NPC's on your side (with what looks like pretty good AI, they even seem to behave like humans some of the time), and he seems to take a lot of hits and be absolutely fine. I don't think this game is going for a 'hardcore' crowd: it's just a very large simulation.

Oh yeah, that wasn't based on your comment. Somewhere I'd gotten the idea that this was supposed to be similar to Demons/Dark Souls, but I don't remember where. I've been waiting to get more details to see if that impression is accurate.

Did anyone play the demo? Its pretty decent. I like the customization a lot.

The art style is neat too.

And I was about to applaud the gameplay, but I just read the first post on here. Its not a bigass rpg? It sure feels like it. As much fun as I had killing that griffin, the first demo mission is really boring, so it doesnt seem to have a good story going for it. If im not getting armor, weapons and doing tons of side missions, I dont see the appeal of making such a huge game. It doesn't have amazing third person action gameplay. Compared to western rpgs like Skyrim and Dragon Age, yeah the melee and aiming is awesome, but its still not DMC quality.

Shit, Now Im confused. I was really under the impression that this was Dragon Age with a better less rpg and more action battle system.

Pretty sure it's an open world RPG game isn't it? I keep hearing how you can walk around the plains and fight random giant creatures.

Also I had a lot of fun customizing this game's iteration of my long running Albino character named Al Bino.

Like I said in my status, the story shouldn't be too bad since they seem to be focusing on it a lot. Looking at how all the big trailers have been story trailers. And you can switch classes. I am genuinely excited for the game after the griffin mission. The prologue mission sucked dick though.

Also SL I keep hearing from people playing the japanese version and interviews that you can get skills in each class. I'll have to research the armor though.

It's an action RPG. So the gameplay focus is on action and adventure, but it has the DNA of an RPG; levelling, customisation, etc.

Forgot the demo was out. So. Hitting. That. Right. Now.

Oh it's also a massive open world apparently. Biggest game Capcom has made or something. Has random events like attacks on towns, etc.
