Saturnine Tenshi
Works in the same way that fifteen dollar map packs persist. People support it.
Johnny
Thing is, we don't know how many people will support Origin yet.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Downloaded the Origin client and a copy of Battlefield 2142 I bought a while ago from their store. I have to say, it's a rather nice client. You don't even have to run it to play the games; it looks like it's focused on downloading, purchasing and patching. deanb
I'd say it's minaly going to get use through the fact they have Sims. But I know a lot of people are jonesing for BF3 and won't be happy that they can't pick it up through Steam. I'm all for services competing with Steam, but a publisher exclusive platform that feels more like it's taking games hostage that presenting much incentive to buy from them isn't really what I had in mind.
Saturnine Tenshi
You think they just won't get it because they have to download Origin for it?
AgamemnonV2
They are really heavily banking that people really really want these games so much they'll go through Origin. I'll bank on people instead just pirating Origin-only games. Well, it's definitely what I'll be doing considering my track record of "trusting" EA. Faiblesse Des Sens
Looks like I'm not buying BF3 anymore. Superior PC version the year they pull this? Fuck em.

It isn't "like" holding the games hostage. It IS holding the games hostage. I think EA has figured out that they can't really compete with steam so instead they're going to remove the ability to choose altogether. Hey, you want to download BF3? Well get our client or fuck off.
Johnny
This is part of competing though, just like you'd never see a Valve title on Impulse or a Stardock game on Steam.
RockyRan
This is part of competing though, just like you'd never see a Valve title on Impulse or a Stardock game on Steam. I think the issue with this though is that they're SPECIFICALLY going out of their way to pull games out of specific platforms just because they're making their own distribution system. You don't see a 360/PS3 multiplatform game discontinuing the 360 version and pulling all copies off the shelves just because they suddenly decided to make it a PS3 exclusive. deanb
This is part of competing though, just like you'd never see a Valve title on Impulse or a Stardock game on Steam. Actually on the US Site Origin stocks Portal 2 and Orange Box. Boxed copies (which is kinda weird) but Valve games nonetheless. Also I wouldn't be so confident on the Valve/Impulse Stardock/Steam thing. Don't forget Stardock sold off Impulse to Gamestop. Gamestop now allow Steamworks games on Impulse and I see no reason why Stardock would want to be self-limiting to only Impulse now it's not their baby anymore. Be nice to see Sins on Steam. WTF
In a nutshell Origin is Ea Download Manager with a friendslist that can now popup when you're in game if you want. It's no steam or anything. It isn't great but neither is it bad.

deanb
I know. Just pointing out how EA games popping off Steam n EA keeping future games to themselves, yet Valve don't seem to nonplussed on yanking ties with EA. Which does seem weird. They've have quite a long-ish working relationship as dev n publisher, seems odd that EA now seem to have Valve right in their sights atm. deanb
Stargate SG-1 towards the later series. Origin is the name of the religion some ascended beings called the Ori use to suppress humans in another galaxy. They go on a religious crusade against the milky way. deanb
Just a heads up but not allowing Wang, which Wikipedia points out is "one of the most common surname in the world", is maybe not a good idea for PR. Just in case any EA employees are looking. Bit of a faux pas regardless of what slang it can be. Johnson is slang for penis too and I doubt that's banned. deanb
Quick question but EA do have a PR dept right? To make sure you don't disallow a common Chinese surname or mail bits of meat or knuckle dusters out or stage fake protests etc?

Thursday Next
Haha... yeah... the PR department are normally the ones that are out there posting loaded guns to 12 year olds telling them to shoot anyone who gets between them and an EA title. The much maligned legal department are the ones charged with apologising to the local police force (http://www.metro.co.uk/news/296342-outrage-over-mercenaries-petrol-stunt) asking for our stuff back (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/news/a152508/ea-recalls-promotional-knuckledusters.html) and general clearing up after PR have offended everyone within range (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits/2794-An-Open-Letter-to-EA-Marketing). Thursday Next
I mentioned the Wang thing to Origin team and it is now fixed, not implying causation by correlation, I certainly didn't get a "Hey thanks for raising it buddy" message from Origin, but at least it's fixed.
