deanb
So there's word going out that there is in fact a way to change your Origin ID. Step one: -Buy a smartphone, Android or iOS - Be in the right country (Apps are region locked, try to live in "the west") - Download "Scrabble free" - Android- iOS - log in with your Origin account - Settings/Menu/Cog whatever - "Edit Account" - Voila Was that so hard people? Luftwaffles
I was actually able to change my ID via EA support because it met one of the requirements for a name change, which is apparently having either your full name, phone number, or other "personally identifiable numbers" like your social security number or govt ID number. Here's a link that details the process. I mean, I wish you could change your name via the app or for other reasons, but this is better than nothing I guess. Also, who the hell puts a govt ID/SSN as their online handle?

But does it let you change your ID to one you've already registered because the way it seems to work is that they have all the EAIDs(Origin IDs) in with the other IDs so since MasterDex is already registered under my email, I wouldn't be able to select it as a new ID. They should have just kept the system they had. I don't see any reason to have changed it.
deanb
Dunno. You'll have to check it out.
MasterDex
Dunno. You'll have to check it out. I can't, apparently. When I went to download it, it said it wasn't available in my region. I'll try again later and see if I can find a way around it.
Thursday Next
You can now change your Origin ID: http://www.origin.com/uk/change-id You're welcome.
MasterDex
You can now change your Origin ID: http://www.origin.com/uk/change-id You're welcome. That's great...but I still can't change it to MasterDex...or -MasterDex-, or _MasterDex_ and I can't use any other symbols other than hyphens and underscores. Any chance you can access EA ID records and get rid of any imposters? Oh and to make things worse, when I search for MasterDex through the 'Add Friends' interface, I get a message back telling me 'NO RESULTS WERE FOUND'. WTF?! Saturnine Tenshi
Relevant from RPS: The funny thing is Origin is awesome at switching to offline mode… You can do that manually, but it’ll also nicely go offline itself if there’s an internet outage – unlike Steam, which completely prevents me from playing my games if I forget to switch to offline while still being connected. It gives me the “go online or offline” window, but will still insist on connecting to Valve.1:0 for Origin for not screwing its customers. Cyber Rat
That might actually motivate Valve to fix Steam's offline mode already. Competition is good. I want Origin to be good so Steam can be better.
P4: Gritty Reboot
Yeah, Valve's Offline Mode works--it's just designed so you need to be online, go offline, then you can launch it every time. It is not helpful for unforeseen outages.

Faiblesse Des Sens
I'm glad Origin is actually becoming a platform, rather than just a gateway. Competition always leads to the consumer winning.
Thursday Next
I think that's a good early line-up. It'll be a cold day in hell before Activision join in though.
Johnny
Am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with Steam's offline mode then? If my connection breaks, I can still play games.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Yes, Johnny. If I don't go ahead and set it to start in offline mode, no games for me. Then again, if I'm playing offline then no Battlefield 3. It cuts both ways. Edited October 28, 2011 by DukeOfPwn

Johnny
Okay, did a few tests. If steam is already running when my network cuts out, I'm fine, but if I have to restart it, or it's not already running, it just won't launch. That's shitty. In general, Steam's client is pretty shitty. The interface for most things is awkward and it's filled with technical issues. Plus, it's a huge performance hog in comparison to say... Impulse (which you don't even have to run to play the games) or Desura.
Saturnine Tenshi
Yep. Makes me want some enterprising monolith to saunter over and root up Valve just so I can play the games I paid for when I want to play them most.
P4: Gritty Reboot
Yeah, it's odd how laggy Steam is; it's almost as bad as iTunes. And you're correct Johnny, if the network cuts out and you're already on, you should be fine so long as your games are up to date. Steam will not launch without an internet connection unless you've previously set it up to run in offline mode.

Saturnine Tenshi
Yep. It does ask.
ZakMckracken
I've never really had any issues with offline mode. I used to use it all the time when I would take my laptop in to work, since the wi-fi there was terrible anyway. I'd just start up Steam without my wireless turned on, and Steam would ask if I wanted to start up in offline mode. I have also had occasions when the connection drops, and it seems like I've had more issues with Steam locking up at those times. Steam also gets really slow to respond when any downloads finish for me. As for Origin, I'm still not a fan. The overlay chat is terribly laggy and you have to import your Origin friends into your game friends (into Battlelog for BF3 friends for instance). My other complaints are more with Battlelog & BF3 (party system, server browser, & random issues joining games) so I don't know they'll also apply to other EA/Origin games. Johnny
When I try to launch Steam and my connection's not working it asks me if I want to run in offline mode... Yep. It does ask. It used to do this for me; don't know why it doesn't know. I unplugged my cable and tried to launch it, at which point it tried to update steam for five minutes and then gave me an error. TheMightyEthan
Oh, I did have it crap out once last year when Steam was supposed to be installing an update. Pissed me off cause I couldn't play any of my games for like two days while my ISP got its shit together. Just bad timing though, usually it works right.
