Faiblesse Des Sens
I havent read the books, but it just feels like they threw it in there to give Cersei and all the King's Landing people something to do. You just summed up the entire season. It's "let's change a bunch of shit to make it seem more interesting and not at all be subtle about anything." SomTervo
Yeah, what's the oh?! PS fuck the books, Ethan don't read them and don't trust anyone who says they're anything better than okay. The TV show will save you countless hours and is better in almost every way In the words of Dean... u say wot m8?? The books aren't bad, don't get me wrong. But they're not well written – and in the most frustrating way. The dialogue is amazing. The characterisation is amazing. But the narrative and pacing is just insulting. Hundreds of pages to get across a couple of plot points. If Martin was a true writer, and not a historian, each book would be 150 pages, max, and would be classics due to the tighter scripting. The actual plot of the world is excellent up until the more recent couple of books, too. Go read the first 10 pages of Titus Groan, The Hobbit, or The Wizard of Earthsea. Then go read the first 10 pages of Game of Thrones. Everything it does wrong rapidly becomes apparent. Even in Groan, where not too much happens in the first 10 pages, it does centuries worth of worldbuilding in those pages, where GoT achieves nothing. deanb
Just watched Battle of Blackwater Bay this morning. Very explosive. Quite a good episode for pushing forward characters. Onwards to the Series 2 finale. Currently good pacing, might even get to watch end of series 5 with everyone else. edit: For Red Nose Day:
Strangelove
Sam got laid and Bronn isn't dead. That shot's crazy. I'm not a big fan of the Sansa situation though. I hope the payoff is worth it.
TCP
The payoff better end with Sansa marrying Stannis. Tyrion, too kind. Ramsey, too cruel. Stannis? Just right.
Thursday Next
I'm beyond bored of Ramsay now. He's got nothing new. Peel this, flay that, creepy smirk. The Sparrow and Cersei scene was gold. Watching the balance of power shift was a great payoff. The Sandsnakes, ugh, the poison was obvious and the tits totally unnecessary. What is the show's problem? Why can't we have a few episodes where nobody gets naked? It's never for a good reason and makes the whole show seem like some teen wank material. Tyrion and Jorah... Finally. Also cameo from Belwas! Huzzah. Looking forward to learning what Tyrrell and Baelish are up to. Not to mention Stannis, Arya, Snow and Mace Tyrrell with Meryn "fucking" Trant in Braavos. TCP
That was suppose to be Belwas?!?! I'm assuming you mean the guy who broke Tyrion free? Also: season 6 casting! Featuring a certain Ironborn pirate, a member of the Night's Watch family, and maybe Chibi Ned? TheMightyEthan
I finally got caught up today. I agree that I'm bored with Ramsay, there's no depth to his character. It seemed for a bit like he might develop some, once he was actually legitimized and couldn't politically afford to just do whatever he wants anymore. Strangelove
I dont know if they ruined Sansa or if she was written this way in the books, but it's a real shame. The actress has gotten a lot better over the years and at times the character shines a bit, but then real bad shit happens to her that makes her seem like nothing but a tool for the other characters. Her being one of 2 of the only remaining Starks also doesnt help. I know that people have pushed aside the red wedding, but I wonder if there will ever be some kind of real revenge for that. I cant see Arya killing any of the Boltons. Theyll probably die by the time she's ready since her training is taking for-fucking-ever. And it sure as fuck isnt going to be Sansa. In an ideal world, Sansa fucks over the Boltons in some way and is instrumental to them losing Winterfell. Who knows. As for Stannis, withouth the women in his life he'd be a good king. With just Davos and his daughter he'd be fine, but I get a sort of betrayal eventually from Melisandre. She's too vague about Stannis's supposed future succeess. Like she knows more than she tells him. And if she doesnt betray him, her having any power I think would be bad. Her having a king would make things bad. She just seems like she's more "evil" than what has been shown so far. Or maybe Im just being paranoid.
TheMightyEthan
I don't know if evil is the word I would use, but she certainly seems extremely self-serving. As do many of the characters.
TCP
Sansa isn't written like this in the books, because in the books she doesn't go to Winterfell. Another reason why the books are superior. And there's more than just two remaining Starks. Bran will pop back next season. Rickon is out there somewhere, waiting for his eventual return. And Benjen may or may not be alive as well. Plus Jon, who's more Stark in behaviour and looks than Sansa.
Mal
Next season will be the interesting one though I'm not entirely sure how well they'll pull of Bran and Rickon plots. Ugh. why did they have to touch Jaime's Redemption Tour?
TheMightyEthan
Approximately how many more seasons until we've caught up with the books?
Thursday Next
Depends on the character arc. Tyrion and Jorah just overtook the books. Jon is rapidly catching them. Stannis is there or thereabouts. Arya is a way off.
TheMightyEthan
So if I understand that correctly right now we are at or near the books, and for the most part (bar a couple arcs) this is new territory or will be soon. I assume Rickon and Bran haven't caught up yet based on Mal's comment. It seems odd to me that they aren't going to be in this season at all. TCP
Bran caught up at the end of last season, well, very very close to catching up. I guess you could say Rickon is caught up. Sansa caught up at the end of last season, then veered off to entirely unknown areas. Jamie is in uncharted territory, same with Brienne. Cersei is right on point. At the pace everything is moving, by the end of this season everyone should at least be to where their book counterparts are, if not past it (looking at you, Jon Snow). deanb
I've said it before: Game of Thrones: Brotherhood. In other GoT related news I'm currently midway through Series 3 (Tyrion has become the head of coin or whatever, Jon is tracking nights watch with the wildlings, n bran n co have bumped into Liam Neesons step-son). Oh yeah, Jamie is gonna struggle to hold a broadsword now too. (oh yeah, another case of "that guy is a known actor-itis" with the dude that captured him n Brienne)
TheMightyEthan
You silly brits and recognizing these people. Tyrion and Boromir are I think the only people I've recognized so far. Also, I'm confused about what you mean by "Game of Thrones: Brotherhood".
deanb
"Fullmetal Alchemist" started getting made as an anime while the manga series was still being written. The anime caught up with and advanced past the manga so started making stuff up to finish the story. Eventually the manga was finished so years later they went back and remade the anime to follow the proper manga storyline as "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood". Game of Thrones is now at that point. p. it's on Netflix, 60 episodes, give it a shot. I wrapped it up in under a month, good story. It's a terrible day for rain. edit: oh as far as Peter Dinkelage I'd only seen him in Penelope prior (also worth a watch, it's set in the atlantic), so yeah wouldn't consider him one of "those" kind of faces. He's only really become known after GoT.
Mister Jack
I'm not so sure they're going to go the Brotherhood route. GRRM already told the show runners how the story ends in his head, so I imagine that the TV show will end up being at least similar to the future books unless GRRM decides to make major changes while he's writing them. TheMightyEthan
Even if they diverge completely, meh.
TheMightyEthan
Well, last night's episode was a definite step up.
Mr. GOH!
Great ep. As far as how far everything is compared to the books, we are all at or beyond the published material now. I would argue that Tyrion's journey is so different from the books that it's hard to say whether he's caught up, ahead, or just very, very different. I suspect though that the season will end caught up or beyond with the books in the main, with a number of elements from earlier books to pop up next season, at least regarding the Greyjoys. I think a lot of the plotlines have been or will be changed so significantly that asking if the character is at the same place as s/he is in the books will be meaningless for about a third of the characters. Right now, Jon, Danaerys, Arya, Bran, and Cersei are roughly tracking with their book counterparts (with Jon being given a lot more to do in the show; Hardhome happens off-page in the books),Tyrion appears to have had his plot accelerated to make up for the missing Barristan , Sansa is in a very, very different place in the books, as are Jaime and Brienne zombie Catelyn! . I think the show will feature significantly different plotlines from the books, but I think they'll end up in very similar places overall, if that makes any sense.
Hot Heart
Whoa, something happened in GoT and it was badass. Just do it Loved the "Oh shit!" look on the whitewalker's face.
Strangelove
Great episode. So does that Olly kid end up doing something retarded later on? I haven't read the books do I don't know. He's suspicious. Feel free to spoil it if it's important.
