Mr. GOH!
I do not like Ed Sheeran or his music, but he was perfectly fine as a Lannister soldier.

I wasn't hugely bothered by Sheeran, it was a bit immersion breaking, but there you go. Reveal hidden contents As for Arya, yeah she's being a bit vicious, but she didn't murder the Lannister soldiers (yet) so it's not like she is totally gone to the dark side. All the Freys she killed were in on the Red Wedding, she spared the wife cos she was innocent. I think Jon and Sansa is interesting, I don't think it will come to violence between them. I think blood will hold them together over Littlefinger's meddling. Wasn't trying to be edgy, just a turn of phrase. I'm not sure why the guy is getting as much hate as he has been doing. I don't really enjoy his music but he was fine in a small role. The whole thing reeks (aha) of fanboys getting upset because someone that's got mainstream pull has appeared in their favourite little nerd property and last I checked, GoT was the most popular show on TV (at least on this area of the internet). TCP
I just found him distracting. Where as Sigur Ros' appearance a few years ago felt natural and great, Ed Sheeran just stuck out the whole time. Saturnine Tenshi
Probably didn't help that they had him in some cheesy af singing scene right off the bat.
TCP
Yeah clearly so they could sell some more copies of the soundtrack.
Mister Jack
I don't even know who Ed Sheeran is. I thought the whole episode was great. Sometimes it pays not to listen to modern music.
deanb
Finally got to watch it today. Pretty great start, though I'm gonna probably have to read up to refresh my mind on Hounds past with that hut. (unless anyone here wants to fill me in). It did well to set up all the major players and it was structured well in flowing from one to the other in nice neat little compact stories. I actually hadn't expected much of Sam so was nice to see him have a decent segment (minus the poo and soup montage). Kinda liking the open animosity and "I know what you are, what am I" kind of kinship between Cersei and ...Ewan...err Greyjoy guy. I'll pick up his name once he's in more than two episodes. And yeah excited to see where Jon and Sansas relationship goes. I doubt it'll lead to blows and blood is thicker n all that, but will be interesting to see where Littlefingers meddling gets him. He's more skilled in the court politics and he's currently amongst soldiers and wildlings which may (hopefully) end badly for him. As for Ed Sheeran, no beef with him particularly, he didn't do anything wrong. He was just Ed Sheeran and that was bad, just kinda pulled you out a bit like there had been some weird dimensional overlap. I guess part of me was also "Jim Broadbent!" but then you slip back into "a magister!". GoT hasn't really gone much for the stunt casting/cameos and when it has it's done it well (e.g Ian McShanes little episode). Was that section at all elevated with having Ed Sheeran there for a bit of signing and then just smiling and nodding along? Not at all. He could have easily not been there and it would have been much the same scene, maybe the little ditty would be sung off key but they're soldiers after all. Mister Jack
About that hut scene: Spoiler While Sandor was "escorting" Arya back in season 4, they stayed in that hut with the farmer and his daughter. Sandor, in a total dick move, decides to rob the farmer of his savings to Arya's disgust, justifying it by saying that they'll both be dead by the time winter comes anyway.

danielpholt
@deanbmmv If anything I found the McShane cameo more distracting. Sheeren has a (hopefully) small part. With McShane I could never get it out of my head that it was Ian McShane being Ian McShane in Westeros. Granted, I don't think the writers did much to help on that front, but in terms of taking me out of the experience I found the McShane stuff to be much worst. Not least because his character name was Ray and, well.
Thursday Next
Well... Spoiler So much for the sandsnakes and the Greyjoy fleet... :/
Mister Jack
This show is really determined to ruin soup for me. Spoiler Too bad about the Iron Fleet but fuck the Sandsnakes. I'm glad they got their asses kicked. Edited July 24, 2017 by Mister Jack
danielpholt
It's a testiment to how badly they managed the entire Dorne subplot that that seems to be the common theme from the episode. It's been ages since I read it, but I'm sure we love them in the books. Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Hot Heart
I think I'm off food now. Got a real urge to grab books off shelves though.
Mal
Give the person who's doing the food bit a raise. Please continue since I'm loving it so much. Spoiler I guess we still have to wait for the Reek/Theon redemption arc. This episode ending kind of hurt... 11 hours ago, danielpholt said: It's been ages since I read it, but I'm sure we love them in the books. They were pretty neutral on the love-hate scale. The whole Dorne plotline is pretty cool though.
Mister Jack
Spoiler A point I heard someone make, and I think it's a good one, is that Theon did the best thing he could have done in that situation by jumping in the water. Obviously, he got triggered by the sight of his men being mutilated, and rightfully so since Ramsay put him through hell on earth, but even if he wasn't thinking clearly, running away was the smarter option for everyone. Even if Theon got the resolve to fight, was he really going to beat all of Euron's men and Euron himself without getting Yara killed in the process? If Euron sensed at any point that he was in actual danger he wouldn't have just stood there and done nothing. Also, by jumping off the boat Euron guaranteed Yara's safety, at least for the time being, because Euron needs a living Greyjoy to present to Cersei. I'm not saying he did any of this intentionally, merely that he just did the right thing for the wrong reasons. danielpholt
Spoiler Why would Cersei need a Greyjoy though? She's already got a loyal one in Euron and as far as I remember the Greyjoy's have kept themselves pretty far away from most of the troubles with the rest of the kingdom. He attacked the fleet to get his hands on the Sandsnakes and bring them back for Cersei. They did murder her child after all. As for Yara and Theon, I forget how the kingsmoot works, but assuming that in order to stake a claim you must have some form of family connection, maybe Euron plans to get rid of anyone who could use that connection in future. Offing Yara and Theon would do just that and allow him to truly have free reign over the Iron Islands. From a show writing point of view, Theon making a run for it allows them to reunite them at a later date, and whilst I'm not sure how much more Yara and Theon can offer Dany, I think the viewers would like to see a true end to the Yara/Theon storyline, one way or another. Or I could be totally wrong and they just didn't want to kill Yara and Theon there and then. My head tells me they must have plans for Theon though. Mister Jack
Spoiler Normally I would agree that there's no practical reason to leave Yara alive, but this is Cersei we're talking about, and Cersei is not known for acting rationally. The more of her enemies you can present for her to brutally torture and execute, the better it makes you look.
Hot Heart
I forgot to mention a little detail that I liked: Tyene Sand styles her hair very close to her mother's now. Given how much they are linking back to stuff in earlier seasons, I get the feeling that she survived because maybe they'll actually do something involving Bronn, after that weird jail scene and "bad pussy" comment
deanb
Having seen it now Yeah the food stuff is rank. As for Cersei wanting a greyjoy, Euron said he'd get her a gift so she might not want one specifically but it is something he can offer her (though I think it's the Dorne lass mainly given the whole killing Cerseis daughter thing)
Mister Jack
Spoiler I never thought I'd ever be rooting for Cersei but I want her to show no mercy to Ellaria and Tyene. Not only did they kill innocent relatives who didn't deserve it, but they have what might be the worst subplot in the entire show. GET RID OF THEM. Also, we could use a new poll, methinks. danielpholt
Can we talk about the poll? People seem to be fairly sure Littlefinger is going to get killed off pretty soon. Why is this? I understand they're making him into something of wedge between Jon and Sansa but that plot line has a while to get just yet; especially with Jon going south. Tormund however.... Potential spoilers for the rest of the season, although it's built upon something we've already seen in the show. Spoiler In episode 1 we saw a vision of the white walkers moving south. Given that in this vision we saw them walking through grass, it's safe to assume they've breached the wall and are marching rather quickly through Westeros. Tormund is heading directly for that wall. And I'd imagine if the WW are going to breach it, they'll head that way. So from where I'm standing (assuming the WW don't hang around at the wall), he'll be the next to fall from the northern camp.
