BrainHurtBoy...2
A Feast for Crows is considerably shorter than A Storm of Swords, so you don't have to worry about it running too long. The prose is beautiful in it, too, but it's many peoples' least favorite in the series. I quite enjoyed it, personally, though, but if you're just reading for Tyrion, Jon, Dany and Arya, you'll be disappointed with it. It's also strange that you're calling her 'Arry'. Though it does clue me in as to what part of the book you're at.... P4: I rank the books 3>2>5>4>1, and most people agree that Book 3 is the best. Most peoples' ranking would be something like 3>1 or 2>1 or 2>5>4
P4: Gritty Reboot
Alrighty, good to know. 1 was amazing so if there are a few even better than that, I'm very excited.
Chewblaha
The books get better and better as you go on. Then you read Feast for Crows. Which isn't bad. Then you read Dance with Dragons, which is half-bad. Opinions, of course. I'd say my list goes as: 3 > 2 > 1 > 4 > 5 Edited September 7, 2011 by Chewblaha
Chewblaha
I'm on the 3rd book and I think its still great. If I recall hearing correctly, it just gets grim dark. It also might be reader fatigue kicking in since there are five books currently and they are all pretty damn long. They seem to get longer with each book. It also may suffer from what Harry Potter did... it just takes so long to get the next book and by then your expectations are pretty damn high to the point that they can't be reached. I personally read on for Tyrion, Dany, Jon and Arry. Some of the side characters parts are really nice too for example... want to read what is going on in the head of another Lannister? Keep at it and take breaks. Currently I am on a month long break, only reading one chapter every so often. I find myself thinking of the story every now and then to slowly process all the information from the first two books... which I killed in 2-3 weeks for both. Dany is just stupid, insane, and stupid. Don't worry about her. Edited September 7, 2011 by Chewblaha
Mal
If that the case, then I want to see her go batshit insane. She is after all fathered by the Mad King and well, her brother was just as insane. So it runs in the family. Character development and all. Well, unless she does something waaaaaaaaaaaaay stupid like go drowning in the Narrow Sea or something. Without saying too much: She has three great assets. Use it. Also guys... don't skew my perception! A few weeks back, reading how Martin's stuff usually turns dismal dispels confidence... doesn't help that I do have an idea of what happens to Jon (Staying out of that thread... is hard) and Sansa (Not like she's in a great position already). As a side note: I like how the world in this series is more or less grounded in reality like ours. Its just that the mythical beings did or do exist and they are coming back in a big way. It takes the characters in the books and me off guard most of the time. Well, time to go into the market for characters I really care for. Thanks guys. >: |
toxicitizen
FLD. Trust me and read Tower of the Hand's recap. It'll still take a while, but it's so useful. Yeah, that's the plan. That site is awesome.
MasterDex
I've been enjoying the audiobooks the last couple of weeks. I'm enthralled and I'll most definitely be getting the paperbacks to add to my library. I'm about 3/4 of the way through A Clash of Kings and I'm loving Martin's writing, it's got a great flow to it and tons of character. Chewblaha, your rating makes me think the books are progressing much like Harry Potter - starting strong, reaching a high point and just tapering off into an eventual "I don't care" by the end. Without giving anything away, how does it get bad? In the situations and resolutions presented or in the actual writing?
BrainHurtBoy...2
Dex: Book five is actually very divisive. Many absolutely loved it, others feel like Chewie, here. Most would put book 4 below book 5. The reason people don't like book four is that the three characters people love most, Jon, Dany and Tyrion, aren't featured. Many feel that those characters tie the entire narrative together, but people like me disagree and enjoy characters like Jaime, Brienne Sam Tarly and Victarion Greyjoy. What it comes down to is taste. I'd stick with the series, myself, and decide for myself. I mean, some may be worse than others, but none of them were bad. MasterDex
That's good to hear. I'm happy enough just enjoying the story. As long as the writing stays at the same level, I doubt I'll have any problem with the exclusion of certain characters.
toxicitizen
The reason people don't like book four is that the three characters people love most, Jon, Dany and Tyrion, aren't featured. I knew the plot was split for book 4/5 and that some characters weren't in 4 but I didn't know who and now that I do, holy shit O_O To have both Jon AND Tyrion not be in the book at all... That's just evil Tyrion and Jon chapters are my most looked-forward-to chapters in the books! The drive to get to the next ones is what gets me through the chapters of characters I don't give a shit about. Like Sansa.
Chewblaha
I mean. Half of book five is INCREDIBLE. Dont' get me wrong. It's just that any part of the story that did not take place in Westeros were incredibly lame (sans maybe three, and that's pushing it). Unfortunately, that's half the book. I really enjoyed Feast for Crows, believe it or not. It was just the way that half the story was being told that didn't make it as good as the others. It was just half the story. That's just an IMO. If you take Feast and the parts that took place in Westeros (In Dance) and put them into their own book, that would be my favorite one. What it comes down to is taste. I'd stick with the series, myself, and decide for myself. I mean, some may be worse than others, but none of them were bad. Had Dance not had anything on the North in it, it would've been beyond bad. But since it did have parts from the north, it was not bad. Just frustrating. None have been bad, just the last two weren't as fun to read (due to missing half of the info needed) as the first three were. Tyrion and Jon chapters are my most looked-forward-to chapters in the books! The drive to get to the next ones is what gets me through the chapters of characters I don't give a shit about. Like Sansa. I used to hate Sansa. Then I read Dany's parts in Dance. Edited September 8, 2011 by Chewblaha
P4: Gritty Reboot
Sansa is a character I love to read about even though I hate her. Martin does a great job with those kinds of characters.
Mal
Sansa is alright. She just believes/believed in all those white knight tales waaay too much. I can let her go since she is a kid. Still, she is pretty damn annoying. Oh Ed... Also good to know that it doesn't get bad, just frustrating that you haven't heard from so and so for a while. Also good to know that Jamie is here to stay for a while. He surely will pick up the slack left from Tyrion. Thursday Next
Fuck Sansa. Every time I see her name head up a chapter my heart sinks. The stuff that goes on around her is interesting, but that's just it, it all happens around her. I tend to get quite immersed when I read, so the feeling that I'm stuck inside what passes for her brain is a horrid feeling, when I read Tyrion, or Jon, there's a feeling of participation in world events, when I read Sansa, I feel like a passenger. You could write Sansa's parts as a third person and it would make no difference, other than missing out on how she decided to choose between the green silk gown and the grey woollen one. She doesn't understand what's going on, so being inside her head is as much use as being inside an empty milk bottle. I've not seen the show, but to be honest if they've hired an actress to play Sansa rather than just stuck a mannequin in the corner of the set, it was a waste of money.

I feel that that's the whole point of how the Sansa chapters are written. Like her, you're trapped in her mind. Like her, you're not privy to the majority of events unfolding around you. You've just got to grin and bear it and hope that it'll all be over soon and that it was just a horrible nightmare and none of it really happened. Pretty much sums up how I feel when I see ~{@Sansa@}~. I honestly check how thick the chapter is before I read on. Just to know how much pain I'm going to have to suffer. toxicitizen
Glad to see I'm not the only one who can't stand Sansa Had Dance not had anything on the North in it, it would've been beyond bad. But since it did have parts from the north, it was not bad. Just frustrating. Man, that had to suck for people who had been waiting since 2005 for the damn book to come out. I'm almost afraid to get up to date on this series. What if I take less than 10 years to read books 3 through 5?! I'll have to wait years for George R.R. Martin to finish book 6 and then he's probably going to die in the middle of writing book 7. Probably gonna choke on a taco, or something equally ridiculous, too! You know, just to spite everyone. Toshi
I just finished watching the whole season. All I have to say is fuck Joffrey, his mom, and Sansa. Tyrion, Arya, and Jon Snow are pretty cool. Finally, fucking dragons man.
Mal
There is a real fear that Martin will die before he finishes, eh?
toxicitizen
Well he's old and he took his sweet ass time writing the last few books, so... who knows what could happen.
Chewblaha
That fear has always been up. I think he'll have to make Winds of Winter and A Dream of Summer within four years though (Since that's how long his contract with HBO is four. I just finished watching the whole season. All I have to say is fuck Joffrey, his mom, and Sansa. Tyrion, Arya, and Jon Snow are pretty cool. Finally, fucking dragons man. Joffrey is a little shit. There's a great line that Tyrion throws at him in the book that you'll see in season two. Something along the lines of "Why the fuck are you still alive?" The line itself is incredibly better, it's just hilarious. Also: Those were wyverns at the end of the show. Not dragons.
Thursday Next
Also: Those were wyverns at the end of the show. Not dragons. They're described as dragons. What's the difference?
BrainHurtBoy...2
Dragons are supposed to have four legs, wyverns only have two. It's nitpicking, but mildly irritating.
Thursday Next
Since both are made up, I don't have a problem with it.
Toshi
If the show keeps saying dragons I figure to talk to others who watched it is much simpler to say dragons. I don't think most people know the difference, but yes, I noticed wyverns as well.
