P4: Gritty Reboot Posted June 4, 2012 Report Share Posted June 4, 2012 So, my thoughts on the final episode: Very good, but a step down from Blackwater as expected. It tied up all the loose ends it needed to, and it actually finished ahead of A Clash of Kings, closing with the prologue of A Storm of Swords. More spoilery commentary through ASOS Prologue/ Season 2: Reveal hidden contents Arya finally got her coin, and we got to see Jaqen's face changing, a detail which will be important come A Feast for Crows. King's Landing has been set up nicely for next season, as we see the tables start to turn against Tyrion and Sansa alike. It was interesting that they had Littlefinger tell her straight up that he would try to take her out of KL (in the book he was behind the attempts but it wasn't stated until later). Dany's story line was good. Different, but good. The House of the Undying was a decent interpretation from the books, though the vision of Rhaegar was missed. They locked up Xaro, which was odd, but maybe he'll get out or they'll use someone else for his role in ADWD and beyond. It was cool to see Khal Drogo again. Theon's actor closed out strong, with a heart-wrenching performance as he considers going to the Night's Watch before changing his mind and failing miserably. Maester Luwin's final scene was sad too. Robb and Talisa's wedding was expected and done well. Chewie: Robb is half Tully, so a ceremony incorporating the Seven wouldn't have been entirely out of the question. Jon Snow finally killed the Halfhand--differently than in the books, but it got the job done. The non-readers we were watching it with picked up on what was happening right away. Finally, Sam and the Others were a fantastic closer. I simply love how the Other leading the wights toward the fist just looks over Sam and doesn't even bother killing him. That may make things--interesting next season All in all a good season, maybe not quite up to the first in terms of book faithfulness and writing, but very good. This is the problem I have with a lot of women that indentify themselves as feminists - and the white knights that stand by their side - all they really are is misandrists in disguise; only interested in shouting about the horrible injustices of today's culture and how men are constantly putting them down with horrible misogynistic literature like ASOIAF. To them, a woman acting more like the "misogynistic" stereotype is a weak-willed sympathizer of men. Westeros is a world that reflects our own around the same period. Rape was common, even encouraged, among soldiers and women had very few rights, if any at all. Yet the fact remains that, just like in Westeros, there were those few who broke the shackles of inequality and rose above the station that their world threw them into. It's well established that Aerys was insane. He stared into fire as though it made him aroused. He was obsessed with it. He would stare into the night. He would hear voices in his head and see things only he could see. He let these things only he could see/hear dictate his life. Okay those couple of things down. Let's jump to Cersei, yust for fun. Cersei killed a woman to hear her die. Pushed her down that well. Cersei is then supposed to be punished by karma by some palm reader who is the equivalent of Miss Cleo. Cersei got her "prophecy" that she'll die after she sees her kids die. She let this prophecy shape her life and her everyday doings. She remembers the voice as we see all throughout AFFC. She hears it all the time. It prevents her from making rational decisions. Cersei also did the following: Watched the Tower of the Hand burn to the ground. Jaime remember seeing the look on her eyes. Remembering that it is the exact same look Aerys had when he would go on burning binges. Those are two different things that Cersei and Aerys have in common when it comes to insanity. Now you say that could be some kind of coincidence, but I think not. Remember: Tywin Lannister married his cousin. The Mad King was married to his sister. If you needed more proof that the inbreeding could lead to insanity, let's take a look at Joffrey. The spawn of incest. Now let's not get hasty here. Tommen, Myrcella are fine people. So was Rhaegar. Now let's take this into account about Cersei. She has the common problem of spacing out when people are talking and thinking about random and oblivious. During her small council meeting, she visually undresses the admiral and ponders sex with him. She then thinks of sex with others (The Kettlebacks [becks?]) and essentially goes off on a tangent in her thoughts. Now. Rhaegar. He was taken seriously and known to be sane. Viserys. No. Dany. Oh Dany. Where do I begin? Let's start with that last point I made about Cersei! Dany. When she's not spacing out/ignoring her small council, rejecting all knowledge of her homeland from someone who actually knows about it and instead takes the word of her insane brother who was just a child when he left, she's thinking about Daario. Or Drogo. She listens to Quentyn Martell and completely ignores what he is saying ("HA HEY UH 50K WANNA FIGHT FER YOUUUUU.") and staring down at Gerris. Then she pays attention to Quentyn. Then she thinks he's ugly. Then she thinks about Daario and all the sex she wants to have with him. Then she, as if she had been paying attention, states that her subjects (whom she calls her children [?????????]) should be protected. However that's more appropriate than calling some dragons that she had pop OUT OF EGGS next to her in a hot enough fire her children. Then we have Qaithe. The invisible to all and mute to all prophet. She tells Dany some bullshit coincidentals and then Dany is stuck making sure that every instance of her life should revolve around what she was told. Beware the Sun's Son! Oh! Actively find a way to spurn him and cause the shit you were warned about to take place. The three betrayals!!! Oh noes! You get betrayed about 300 times throughout this but you only focus on the specifics of each. Anyway. The point I'm making about all of this is that there have been hints as what insanity entails in the Yorge ARAR Martini storyland. Dany, Cersei, and Aerys II share many of these hinting traits. I believe that Dany is an insane individual. We have NEVER had a POV in which she was seen by someone. Every single time Dany is seen or physically present in are all through her eyes only. Even Barristan talks about how she's incompetent, like her father, and let's emotions guide her path, like her father. Then Barristan hints ever so subtly that maybe it should have been he to put the sword through Aerys's back instead of Jaime. It is so slightly hinted at that some people may not have picked it up. So FDS point still stands. I think things will change with Dany in the Winds of Winter after what happened in Dance. Of course things could go your way. AFFC/ADWD spoilers Reveal hidden contents Cersei dreams she is naked and everyone is laughing at her in the beginning of AFFC. Well get around to finishing ADWD and lo and behold... This kind of stuff is all over the place, and it's certainly possible. I could still see her maturing and things going the other way though. I know it sounds silly but I felt a bit oversaturated with all my favorite characters in one book for so long and so often. I miss the Sansa chapters, believe it or not. I think Sansa might be one of my favourite characters. She's come a long way from the annoying little girl in AGOT, and she's got some pretty interesting stuff going on. As for Crows, what did you think to it? Aside from the last third, i was completely underwhelmed. Maybe it was coming off ASoS but it lacked any real...excitement. Thankfully ADWD fixed that. As for AFFC I actually liked it but can see why people were underwhelmed with it since folks had to wait years for the next book after ASOS and it wasn't nearly as exciting. Besides that I've learned that you're basically looking to get spoiled when discussing the TV show on the internet without having read the books, or reading the books way after they come out.
