This was on the corner of my eye while I was working and I wasn't much interested in it. Now that I can sit down and watch it... I'm interested. Also, Insomniac, got to love their humor. :)

And I know this won't happen but this game seem like it would be nice for some split screen co-op action. Four player even...

I think it looks great. I love coop gameplay when it genuinely feels like each person plays an integral role (L4D, comes to mind).

I messaged my friend who works for Insomniac (Community Manager) and asked him if the characters are interchangeable, or if each one brings something truly unique to the table. I will update if I hear back from him.

I think what I like most about this title is how butthurt PS3 fanboys are over it being multiplat

Seriously, the tweets insomniac keep getting are just batshit insane.

They range from "this is going to suck because it's multiplat" to "you backstabbing assholes!"

But like everyone said, I love the style and humor of it and I can't wait to see some proper footage.

I especially love the NOLF vibe I got from the trailer.

Fanboys are so predictable!

at least it ain't as bad as the Final Fantasy XIII multiplatform announcement.

  • 1 year later...

New game from the makers of the Ratchet & Clank and Resistance series.

It had fallen off my radar from when it was called Overstrike (that's still the team's name though), but having played the demo, I'm excited. It gives me a bit of the same vibe as I got from Resistance 2's co-op, but with combat a bit like Mass Effect 3 meets Uncharted, i.e. it's got some different combo-able (that's a word!) abilities mixed in with the shooting, and character movement is quite spry.

Recent interview with the Insomniac Game's President and CEO, Ted Price, who even joined IGN Australia for a gameplay commentary. Seems like a pretty cool dude, and clearly pleased with what they've made.

So, you've got your tank-y character with a shield (Dalton), your sniper (Jacob), your medic/debuffer (Izzy) and your rogue/has-a-gun-that-creates-singularities-er (Naya)

(You may notice that puts Liara and female Shepard alongside once more. Though, now the former doesn't sound irritating, while Hale's Bastila/fake British voice does).

It actually works quite well in single-player too, with the bots picking up enough slack if upgraded properly (i.e. needs to be done manually), which is neat and actually means I might grab this on 360.

I know this has been said a ton of times and it's easy to dismiss as nit-picking but I think it was a really bad idea to change it from the original Overstrike concept to what we have now.  Even if your gameplay is fairly generic, sometimes your game can still be salvaged by cool characters, a clever script, or a pretty, eye-popping art style.  It can all come together to make the game something something memorable despite its lack of originality in other areas.  But when you make the ENTIRE game generic because you think you will appeal more to "teh hardcorez" that way, it tends to please nobody.  I have yet to see anyone say they like the new style more than the old one.  Now, it's still possible to like the game, I'm sure, and if you do then I'm glad and I hope it gives you many hours of entertainment, but it's really hard to claim that this new aesthetic is an improvement.

That said, I'm willing to admit that it's possible the demo was just a really poor representation of the final product.  Maybe it'll turn out that the full game IS really good and a must-own, but I did not come away from the demo with that kind of optimism.

Heh, probably should've checked for an old Overstrike thread but I know Dean wanted us making new threads (or at least not making it so things have to be split).

Honestly, I enjoyed the demo. I don't care about the visuals (which, originally, just looked like TF2 anyway), it's still got the same sort of humour/levity, and they've stated how the old weapon concepts actually kinda sucked and weren't fun. I wasn't really expecting anything truly original, but I do love third-person shooters for the most part. If you thought the game was going to play like a pre-rendered trailer (though it still retains a lot of the key aspects shown), then I really don't know what to say...

I felt the controls performed well, as I was able to zip about the battlefield quite efficiently, and the shooting was satisfying, whether you were sniping or getting up close with a shotgun. Nor did I find I needed to rely on online co-op; I was quite happy to play alone and be able to switch between characters, with the bots performing just fine.

I'd recommend at least giving the first half of the gameplay commentary a quick watch, since it shows completely different stuff to the demo and may allow you to get a better handle on how it plays.

Well maybe I would be willing to give it a shot, but if this is anything like my experience with Borderlands 2, all my friends are going to have this game for either Xbox 360 or PC.

Cause, you know, as I said before the game will most likely depend a lot on having co-op make up for any AI mishaps.
