Far Cry 3

really wanted to like the first one but given the whole Malaria n checkpoint stuff it kinda was a bit "meh".

Exactly what I thought. Far Cry 2 had some great things going for it, especially in terms of graphics, engine (especially the engine), and gameplay, but the infinite army of jeeps and respawning checkpoint guards really ruined it.

I loved Far Cry 2. It was one of the most immersive games out there. If they had changed it to where you could actually clear out the checkpoints and they would stay cleared I bet 90% of the haters would go away but if you learn to stay off the roads the game gets much easier. This is one of those games that I understand why people don't like it and I can't argue with them but just because I loved how the game was fully immersive I let all the bad things slide. I hope Far Cry 3 still has that same feeling while perhaps removing some of the annoyances. I really don't want them to remove the free roaming nature of FC2 though.

I just couldn't stand the fucking malaria thing. It made me feel unbelievably constrained in exploring the game's fascinating world.

The malaria thing was weird. You only ran out of pills at certain times in the game when it was scripted to so I never worried about wandering too far away. Oh and apparently the Malaria is back for FC3.

Really? You only ran out when they wanted you to? I should probably give it another go, then.

Yeah, there's only specific times when you run out because there's specific missions to get more meds. I don't think you can die from it unless you put off going on the medicine missions. I don't really know though.

Update: Seems you can never actually die of the malaria. Some people have reported passing out and waking up in the church though.

I think the antagonist in the Far Cry 3 reveal is... how should I say...

He seems like a very exaggerated and overtly annoying man who will probably not put up much of a fight (my suspicion is that he'll be a "run away" sort of character). It really seems like they're stretching his personality and dialogue, and I personally found his monologue boring, uninteresting, and overall very obnoxious. It's the same sort of feeling I get when people attempt to be philosophical when they know nothing about it.

I don't know much about being philosophical either, but it's not hard to see when someone falls flat on their face trying.

So yeah now I remember why I disliked Far Cry 2. Fucking guard points. Thing is it's "guard point scouted" doesn't do anything though like clear it out (like safe houses do), or add any particular advantages. So everywhere you go it's these annoying segments of stop car, get out shoot people (since your machine gun on back is generally pretty shitty), get back in car, or one of there's since yours is probably fucked, and go your merry way. Rinse n repeat a few times and arrive at mission.

Once again, You guys realize you can drive around the checkpoints right?

Also, Why is everyone in the media so shocked by the announcement? I thought it was already documented that FarCry 3 was well in development. Direct2Drive had preorders up for it at one point for crying out loud.

But that takes just as much time to re-route halfway across the country to avoid a check point. They're annoying both ways. If say they only re-spawned after a couple days that'd be neat, but they respawn as soon as you're out the area.

1) This is counter-intuitive.

2) This assumes you see the check point in time.

3) This assumes you don't run into any jeeps on the roads.

4) This assumes the terrain allows you to do so.

ie. you're fucked when you're in the middle of the jungle

Yeah, it's amazing, we can drive around checkpoints! You know it's the sign of quality of the game where you're forced to do that if you want to have any chance of remaining stealthy, but in return, you get to spend plenty of real life time traveling to the next objective as you drive the oft-times long and grueling "alternate" route through large areas of emptiness and lots of rocks. And if you're lucky, you won't have an army of jeeps on your ass.

Otherwise, you get to arrive with an army of jeeps hot on your ass and the gunfire of newly-attracted guards... which in turn will bring more jeeps. Fantastic.

Mark of quality, I say!

That would be nice if I didn't have to drive through the checkpoints because of the army of jeeps chasing me.

Unless I wanted a nice prolonged firefight that would delay my mission by about... I dunno, minimum 20 minutes, as I will most likely end up in a ditch somewhere and have to fight off the jeeps, and then move on. In which I shall attract yet another army of jeeps by the time I actually reach my damn objective.

I'd wager and go as far as saying that you only have to do so much as turn around and they've already respawned.

This happens a lot more often than you'd think. In fact, almost all the time, since if you go off-road, the jeeps will literally road-block you from getting anywhere to your objective. If you're lucky, your jeep won't blow up. Deny it all you want, but driving anywhere unscathed with a group of jeeps firing at your ass isn't as great as you'd think it to be. Especially when it blows up your ride. Sure, you can take their jeeps off of their cold, dead hands, but this process is as rinse-and-repeat as it gets.

Offroading is pretty horrible in Far Cry 2. There's so many damn rocks off the beaten path that my general choice of traveling in the late game was to just walk along the road until some stupid patrol came, blew up one jeep, and jacked the other (not that it did much good to my health). And that's assuming they came in groups of two. If I do recall, there were also one car patrols, which made things a fair bit easier.

Driving around the checkpoints, well. Achievable at some, particularly crossroads, but for most of them you're between a rock and a hard place, literally.

I think I played the same version Yantelope played. That one with all the jeeps sounds like shit.

The way I remember it, the sound of a jeep meant a quick jump in the bushes and a sweet ambush sequence where I'd get to kick some ass. Wasn't nearly that common though. I didn't even have a problem with the malaria thing so much; I can see why people might hate it but frankly it hits you at such perfect cinematic moments that it really adds to the tension. It's like it's scripted to happen at the worst possible times but it really increases tension to that regard.

I didn't like the guard points refilling so often, but my biggest problem with that was not that you couldn't clear them but that the distance you had to travel away from the point before they respawn was extremely short. I wouldn't mind if they respawned based on time or at a greater distance. All the same, it wasn't as big a deal as people made it out to be; just more things to shoot in a shooting game.

Far Cry 3 looks really great. I don't really like the direction they seem to be taking with the story so far. Your boat blows up, your girlfriend disappears... I have a feeling this is gonna end up with some surprise monsters half way through the game and that was a pretty unsatisfying moment in the first one; it was just too spontaneous and too drastic of a change that late. So far all signs point to no; but I don't remember original Far Cry promotional material ever mentioning the monster things. Also gonna miss the interchangeable characters of Far Cry 2. As pointless as it was in terms of narrative, it was always kind of cool to see the different characters react differently depending on what role the game would randomly assign for them. Just added the whole feeling of being expendable throughout the game and I was kind of excited to see them explore that more, but it's a small detail.
