Far Cry 3

Just to point out but they're not linking story up and for anyone unaware; Far Cry and Far Cry 2/3 are made by different people. So don't expect the usual Crytek "here's some people to shoot and now for something completely different" storyline.

And yeah I'd imagine there will be a fair few mechanical/engine similarities between 2 n 3. tbh Dunia was a really nice engine, so I'd be fine with it staying as is.

No, Far Cry 1 is Crytek, Far Cry 2 n 3 and every other spin-off that isn't Far Cry 1 is made by Ubisoft.

Far Cry 1 is CryEngine 1, Far Cry 2 is Dunia engine and Far Cry 3 I think is maybe Dunia 2

Basically Crytek made Far Cry 1. Ubisoft made everything else.

The spin-offs make sense, but Far Cry 2 n 3 have very little if anything at all in relation to the original Far Cry game and should technically be their own franchise. But as X-com taught us: On the few occasions the industry makes a new franchise, they don't always give it a new name to match.

I love Far Cry 2, but I'm still sort of skeptical about this. If they do it right, it'll be a great game, but they could mess it up in so many ways possible. The demo from a little while back (E3 maybe) scared me with its linearity.

It's an E3 demo. They threw it together to have something to show, it's probably not even going to be in the game. I hope it's nice and open, Far Cry 2, other than the mentioned flaws, was one of the best shooters of this gen, but judging based on that demo isn't gonna get you anywhere.

It worries me, though. That article Dean linked touts the "Linear Missions, Open-Ended Environments" of Far Cry 3, and that is definitely not what I want. If they make it a "open world, but then all your missions are linear and scripted" type of thing I will be sorely disappointed. One of the things that was amazing about Far Cry 2 was that your missions took place out in the world, and if one went to shit you could just take a jeep and high tail it out of there to anywhere in the giant open world.

Man, one of the quotes on a picture in that article kinda hints that they might have dropped fire propagation... and god, I hope not. That shit was SO COOL in Far Cry 2. Lighting a few bushes and watching that fire race across the plains, burn down trees, and then ignite a propane tank was an absolute joy. I built maps in the map maker expressly designed for fucking with fire propagation.

The fire? You could use it to kill folks and set off explosions, as well as directing people where you want them to go.

I guess with FC2 it was set in the African bushlands, and thus plenty of flammable shrubbery around. But middle of a jungle? Tend to be quite damp.

That's true, it would be damp, but realism trumps fun, let's just pretend that shit is flammable. It's better that way.

And yeah, the fire was pretty useful once it got going. Gunfight on a plain, can't see the shooters because of the tall plants... light that bitch on fire, let them ALL burn.

The other great dramatic feature was the gun jamming. I know it annoyed some people, but it was so uncommon that I really loved it. A tense gunfight, and you're racing through a warehouse, bullets whizzing all around, while you punch the shit out of your jammed shotgun, trying to get it to pump. No other feature in the game got your heart pumping like a gun jam at JUST the wrong time. And for the people who got pissed at the guns breaking... you guys are freaks, the only times I managed to break a gun is when I worked (pretty hard) with the goal of breaking them.

Far Cry 3 might be good, but I don't want it to just be good. I want it to be good in the ways Far Cry 2 was good. I want that great health system, I want weapon jams, I want an open world where I can tackle missions freely, I want fire propagation, I want the day-night cycle, I want lots of arbitrary guard posts okay, do some things different, make improvements, but don't forget the horse you rode in on.

My favorite thing with the fire is when you would fire an RPG and the backblast would catch the ground behind you on fire, often resulting in me freaking out like "Why is my health going down!?" before realizing I was standing in a bunch of flames.

I had a rusty RPG misfire on me, the shell fell to the ground in front of me spinning around and lighting the grass on fire before exploding. I went running as fast as I could for my life. It was one of the most terrifying and awesome game moments ever. That's one of the reasons I loved Far Cry 2.

Best I can tell there's no health system like the old game. Seems much more "actioney" than last tome. Not sure if keen or not. (i.e the zip lining about n such). It'd require being a bit more scripted and you'd lose the open world-ness in that.

Modified reload animation based on whether the gun is dry or not, I like that- not that special, but it's the little things that I appreciate. I wanted to start off with something positive... because the rest of this is gonna be pretty negative. The action looks way too run and gun, not tactical. It looks too scripted. The hallucination stuff looked heavyhanded and dumb. And underwater sections? Booooooo. Really gonna have to lower my expectations here.

Yeah, that looks like everything I didn't want from Far Cry 3. I'd gladly trade scripted sequences of intense action for the ability to approach any mission however I want. And I mean, however I want, not just "go left to get to the zipline" or "go right to get to the zipline".

I'm with Six on this, my expectations have been lowered.
